Anyone know what bits of kits the big boys use these days?

Recommended Posts

Ok being a bit of a synth geek myself I was wondering if any of you guys know what bits of kit the big boys use these days i.e. Aphex, Squarepusher, BoC, U-ziq, Cylob ect?

I know Autechre use Elektron Machinedrum/Mono, Nord Modular + Max/MSP, Ceephax loves his ole classic Roland's and Mr James has a GX1 and Memorymoog amongst other things.

Forgive me if this has been done to death on here already.

Well tha'ts one but what about the rest like BoC and Cylob?

Cylob writes quite a bit about what he's up to on his blog:

Looks like he's been experimenting with Monome a lot lately.

Cylob is also noted for writing his own software.

I started programming in the first version of SuperCollider in 1998, making a simple drum machine / synth, and later a granular automatic remix tool. After a few years break, I returned to the program in 2001 (version 2 on Mac OS 9) and made a new "drum machine" with many more different sounds. Extending this further, I added 8 step sequencer modules and a much more involved synthesis system to go with it. I used this new program, named Cylob Music System 3000, to make a series of EP's which were released in 2004. After this I started to investigate the new version of SuperCollider running on Mac OS X, which, although it had a much steeper learning curve, was much more flexible in terms of sound patching and generation. Attempting to learn from my previous mistakes, I set about making a new version of my program (CMS Environment) the scope of which has grown to encompass many different ways to compose and create sound.

The CMS consists of 784 classes, the code itself coming to 4.1 MB. It remains a work in progress, having taken 5 years so far.

Some of the BOC sounds use the Roland Sh-101 and a Yamaha CS series. Some people claim the 70. Maybe they think "Music 70" is a clue. It definitely has a thinner sound than an 80. There is that Yamaha sound. Of course, tape manipulation. Lately, I'd bet some of that is software run through tape and Drawmers. Their sound has transitioned but kept the original feel. The instruments really don't matter if you have know what you want.

You may want to re-examine Aphex Twin and Autechre for a broader idea of their gear.

I hope that helps.

Cheers dude I can certainly here a Moog bass in Geoggadi.

I've seen a kit list about of what Autechre still use hardware wise but can't seemto find it anymore and that FM interview with Richard is classic crock of shit if ever I heard it but I have a good clue to the some of the stuff he's used in the past.

Ok Squarepusher anyone? (I know he plays bass btw  )
