seriously, it was trouble making a thread with a question this general.

you know what it's like when music, sound, and the related equipment just amuse you beyond words?? you sit there all day and fuck with it. you spend a few hours a week pirating plugins just because it's fun to see what new ones can do. you get ideas in the shower about potentially cool ways to use the clock input on an sh101... or how to mangle a snare. this is how he gets his sounds, i'm sure. just being unable to leave music alone; constantly pelted and harassed by unrealized ideas. and the more you do it, the better you get.

there's no magic trade secret that will tie it all together. you have variable A, time -- how many hours you put into musics. then variable B -- nardoz factor. how well you make use of each hour. this gradually rises as you get more experienced. richard has spoken of being "on a roll" too... if you just spend 3 weeks solid doing nothing but eat sleep music, by the end of that, variable B will have gone up exponentially... but if you take a long break, it drops off. finally we have some constant C (appropriately) -- natural ability, you got it or you don't.

A*B*C == AFX Level

(who here has AFX Level of OVER 9000?)

This might be a stretch, but I seriously think RDJ used a UPIC for the intro sounds to windowlicker. I heard a UPIC demo and it sounded remarkably similar.

I believe it's a phase vocoder that he's using during the intro to stretch out the voice and have it retain it's character. Also, there are FFT tricks all over that album. He gets a lot of mileage out of them.

The one thing I haven't figured out are those killer drum sounds on Windowlicker. Any thoughts, people?
