I'd say he spends loadsa time stockpiling recordings of any old tweaks, loops and sounds in the studio, edits anything interesting it into usable audio snippets then cherry picks what he's in the mood for and perhaps adds some simple melodies or sequences over the top.

I think he said as much in an old FM interview and if that studio pic with the Fenix, Notron's and 303 belongs to him then those reel-to-reels give it away as well.

Apparently lot of electronic artists work in the same way like Luke Vibert for example as messing around with stuff is often the best way of discovering something unusual rather than trying to plan something out beforehand.

Aphex's melodies are really simple. He is just brilliant at hearing what works. Ive taught myself a lot of aphex melodies on the guitar and they are really really simple. Dunna if that means anything

fuck off dick breath, you try making up melodies like Fingerbib, 4, Flim, avril 14.. exactly

Hi Richard.

It's true though, the melodies themselves are often extremely simple. I can't believe you used 4 as an example of a difficult tune. Black keys all the way. It's often what he does with the simple melodies that's important - presentation , context etc.

Besides this, marf wasn't even sying his melodies are easy to make up, just easy to play, which is completely different

to compose a decent melody is much different than making drum patterns, theres much more talent required, with drum patterns unfortunately there is a notion that more complexity equates to more quality, this is why there is so much breakcore trash

hi as an afx forum poster i am 110% qualified to speculate on how he makes trax, and here i go:

richard starts by waking up, maybe taking a shower and rubbing himself with soap. then he takes an analogue bubblebath and has a spliff. then he makes toast, but not in the tub (more squarepusher's thing). then he decides the toast is inadequate and cooks eggy toast. then he blows his nose. then he powers up his 303 but gets distracted by squirrels out the window.

after hunting them all down, he smears their warm blood on analogue tape, the iron and chi inflused into his analogue meltdowns, patch patch o shit knobs kabloom

six months later it's out as a 97" on rephlex
