my personal favourite is 'hey let loose your love' but 'we are all pan's people' is a popular favourite

you can use this handy appliance to navigate GBX releases!

i think a lot of it is kneejerk. short tracks, analogue synths? must be boccy.

also you'd be silly not to notice that they're both tapping into mid 80s cold war dread and PIFs and suchlike.

but i think that their paths have diverged - ghost box are making the sort of music that i wish boc were still making.

anyway the most boccy gbx stuff is the focus group, i think. nearly every FG track sounds like a splintered version of a boc vignette. some BP stuff sounds like broadcast, or delia, or all sorts of other shit.

it's a conundrum of a sound. very reserved and stiff-upper-lip english, but psychedelic and quatermass as fuck too. also we need more eric zann!

All very well said kaini. I myself put it down to being an older listener in part, but GB (Focus Group in particular) summons up the old Nigel Neale Quatermass television serials that I became aware of through my Dad (and it can't be a coincidence that GB reissued Seance At Hobs Lane), as well as MR James and Algernon Blackwood (fairly obviously), maybe even hints of The Wicker Man. And I really cannot see a link with BoC myself beyond the shared influences you mention.

As regards a starter for The Focus Group, I'd agree with 'Hey Loose Your Love', my fave as well. The Ritual And Education digital sampler is also a good overview of GB as a whole if you don't mind splashing out a couple of quid.

Also, I think you agree kaini that their aesthetic is a major part of appreciating GB (got to be a better way to put that, but I've had a long day). I'd be interested to hear what you think of house's other music work. Personally I love the stuff he's done for Primal Scream.

Also, there are moments during Focus Group tracks such as 'Swinging Phantom' that put me in mind of Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, which links back to Trunk.

full mp3s of what? last thing I bought from them was "Mount Vernon Arts Lab - Séance at Hobs Lane", and I think that completed their catalog for me.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

You got a couple of tracks from the album - From an Ancient Star and Clockwork Horoscope, and erm that was it. Loving the album though, a lot more upbeat than the previous two.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

fuck me, ghost box just get better and better!

your response is so yesterday.

one of the tracks on this has the exact same backing track as the new mobility from the owl's map, also i'm fairly sure that i hear broadcast people on widdershins... sorta this albums scarlet ceremony... although nothing like it. fuck i love scarlet ceremony.

i'm searching for the perfect ragga jungle track to mix with 'a great day out'. SL2's on a ragga tip mixes good with it :)

also factoid, the ladies talking on mogadon coffee morning are sampled from a 70's PIF about pickpockets :)
