i just thought the guy getting called a troll for politely suggesting that modular owners try to make actual songs is the best thing ever

He's not, I just dislike his "serious" output, I wonder how long it will take for him to release that he sucks at doing soundtrack/ambient music, he's pretty much a synth wanker now-a-days like that guy making drones with a Buchla.

i thought it was pretty funny as well, meant to acknowledge that earlier

it's true though, that like 80% of people who stuff like the Music Easel, just make Subotnik tracks, but that's practically what they're made for.

they make drone shit because they are idiots with more money than sense, have spent a shit load of cash on a modular to try and be in with the scene and then realise they don't know what the fuck they're actually doing. boring drone noises are the only thing they can get out of their modular.

okay, if you own a lot of hardware and you're not producing cherry tracks, you're suffering from one of two problems:

1) you bought the gear because it's trendy and you're clueless

2) you like playing around with the gear more than writing songs

i feel #2 is still quite noble, but then my opinion is biased

most of the subotnick i've heard is much more interesting than 'drone' or 'noises' not sure if that's what you're referring to BCM but id advise you to check out more subotnick if you've written it off as masturbatory crap

but generally i agree that most people who own those types of modular synths are very rich hobbiests.

there are a bunch of really interesting composers out there doing stuff with modulars (new and old) , but most of the owners of them probably aren't even making music

I know a guy who has 5 panel Serge system and he hasnt made a single track with it, hes owned it for almost 10 years

i wasn't specifically referring to subotnik no, just a large proportion of synth hobbyists in general....I'll check out subotnik's stuff tonight....

I was just browsing through some pages of the Serge Animal, looks sweet as fuck.

Can't find anything on prices though, probably about £3000 or something ridiculous!

when it comes to serge stuff it's definitely a case of "if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it".

You're all part of the now-now-now ME generation. Proper music should never exceed 3 beats per minute and you should not move onto a new note until you have fully explored the tonal possibilities of the previous one.

I've noticed this. I get suckered into watching vids of massive modular systems on youtube, expecting amazing tunes..only to find another video of some farty arpeggiated squeaks

I suppose modular synths are cooler than train sets.
