Husker Du and Sugar maybe? Dunno, I never got into 'grunge', it always struck me as music for rich kids who hated their parents.

Start with Up In It and Congregation. Progress chronologically.

I would say skip Up in It and start with the EPs from the Congregation era.

The great lost 90's alternative US band is Come. Start with Eleven Eleven, but all their stuff is worth checking out. Essentially Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw, who was the drummer in Codeine for a while. Probably my favourite dual guitar playing.

When I was a youngish man in the early 90s I liked a bit of Grotus, Victim's Family, Nomeansno and Alice Donut, who were sort of grungyish but with a little humour and/or a less tedious sense of self-obession. Grotus always seemed very serious though, although I think they were a bit pally with Mr Bungle.

Guided By Voices might be worth a listen, but I didn't really get into them that much. Also, Swell might fit in with what you're looking for, yek. And maybe Babes In Toyland.

Aside from a lot of bands mentioned here(Afghan Whigs was a great one)...

Morphine

Guided By Voices(I'm sure all of these were probably mentioned already, ah well)

Hum

Sunny Day Real Estate(their first two records were the best albums out of Seattle in the early 90's)

Failure(this band gets people into weird obsessive fanboy states, it's quite weird...)

Porch

Screaming Trees

The Stone Roses(yeah yeah, "not 90's", they count...)

also, in retrospect, I think Alice in Chains was, by far, the best out of all the "grunge" bands. They probably would have been much more popular had Nirvana or fucking wack-as-grandma's diarrhea Pearl Jam had never been around...

yet another edit: and with that last paragraph, I will say with a straight face that the Mad Season record was, again, by far, the best thing that any member of Pearl Jam was ever involved in. Fuck that record was actually really, really good...

Watching ex-hairbands go grunge was an entertaining part of the early '90s.

i'll second the breeders, and add Tool. while they are still around they released their two best CDs in the mid nineties.

i'm also thinking about adding soundgarden (edit: now i'm seeing it on your list).

They evolved since then (as all people do from their teens). I'm not really a fan but I do think Daniel Johns is quite talented. Here's a decent live clip from a couple of years ago (the crowd isn't really into it though.)

I recently bought some old Primus albums: "Suck On This" and "Pork Soda." Herb "The Ginseng Drummer" blows my mind, he's up there with Bonham IMHO.

Fuck yeah!

The Lemonheads

*has five boners for Evan Dando*

fucking agreed. Evan Dando is a genius wrapped in a dream. i was just listening to the new album. still love that band.

back to the topic.

it' begins and ends with Pavement. Pavement is the only band you need to care about from that period. The rest were all masturbating. Pavement is eternal. Pavement is underneath the stories and in between the lines. Pavemest ist rad.

also, L7.
