if you are interested in portability i have owned two western digital passports. use them to carry most of my music library to and from work. i really like them.

i had a 250 gb passport for about a year but the SATA to USB board in the enclosure failed (probably because i left the drive inside the cloth carrying case whenever i used it --> higher temps). i just took out the drive and put it in my desktop as a third internal drive. i might buy another enclosure for it, i dunno. i bought a 320 gb passport for something like $80. i think their 500 gb drives are around $120.

be mindful of the heat --> lifetime of the SATA to USB board inside

All the MyDrive or One-touch maxtor things or whatever the fuck bullshit Seagate offeres are fucking shit.

Stay away from those things that come in an enclosure already.

Just buy a HD, buy a case, slap the fucking drive in the case and back up your shit.

yeah usually if they're "Sleek" and "small" they're going to be more expensive than some of the bulky ones.

I got a 1tb Calvary for like 100$ which has the exact same insides as a Western Digital. Before that I had a 500 gig WD. (still have it)

to be honest ive had the maxtor drive for two years now and i havent had a single problem. its turned off right now because i dont want to have problems with the transferwhen the new one comes.

are there any internal hd's you recomend? im looking at 1tb.

i like zip drives. i still have two... but they're on a shelf, instead of in computers. i also have like 30 zip disks in crazy colors ^_^

edit: i never liked WD as a hard drive brand, usually when i've had failures it's been WD. that being said, i haven't bought their drives much over the last ten years. been happy with seagate as a brand in general.

For a laptop? I dunno, Seagate makes pretty decent shit. Here's a TB drive for 99 bucks:

I still have 2 ZIP drives for my k2500x. They don't see a whole lot of use anymore though...

fuck you Zdata!

so i was stuck with this best buy gift certificate, and i so im like, shit, i do need a hard drive. so i drive all the fucking way across the city to the nearest best buy, and i buy this cheap ass 500 GB external hard drive by "Zdata" for $100. Yay! i thought i had won.

that is until i wake up this morning to find my giant downloads stuck at half way and broken, and the light on the hard drive (power light?) is flickering and i cursed and cursed inside my soul. now i have to drive all the fucking way back to best buy to hopefully get a refund, but they will probably make me exchange it for another shitty ass hard drive that wont work either.

Look for an external enclosure to fit your hard drive at newegg

I run two d4 Lacie 500gig drives.

They cost around 150-170$

They have support for USB2, Firewire 400/800 and eSATA

I've been using lacie drives for close to 8 years now... only problem i've ran into with them is once in a blue moon a power supply will fail and make you think you just lost all your data. Other than that, they are pretty solid.

Seconded on the LaCie - Acomdata is another reliable brand I can personally vouch for... I have a 160GB drive I've had for almost 5 years now, and still works. I don't leave it on any longer than I have to.

Yes you can - the WD passport ext hds use laptop hds, and you can buy a laptop hd enclosure.

yeah, the drive from my wd passport is hanging in my desktop right now until i buy another enclosure. the obvious advantage is portability, but like i said earlier the sata to usb board failed on mine probably because i kept it in the carrying case and it ran too hot, so it is always a trade off.
