Right at the end of Tewe there's a noise that's barely audible through speakers, but when heard through headphones sounds like some kind of hell-hound slobbering into your ears. First time I listened to the track through headphones I was alone, in the dark, on acid. It was terrifying.

It's a cat purring!

And Tewe is enough reason for Autechre to exist, even if it was the only track they ever did.

sean would be pretty pissed to hear you talk about mira like that, dude.

watch yourself...

In Pen Expers there's a snippet of what sounds like a woman from a porn film, it always annoys me when I hear it.

Awesome track, I'm still unraveling its mysteries 12 years after first hearing it.

This track has always made me think of streets at night in the rain.

My ex girlfriend said it made her think of barren deserts, full of rattlesnakes.

We broke up, it clearly wasn't working out.

Weird, Tewe always reminded me of rain too (not at night, though - definitely bright, maybe early morning), and it reminds my brother of a desert with red sand.

never mind i read Cichlisuite

i like that one more

Slapped on bine upon reading this. Couldn't hear anything sounding like a woman from a porn film.

You sure it's bine ?

edit: Tewe is one of their finest, anyone know what the elasticated instrument sound used throughout is? Tabla or something?

also.

Tried to find a link that's not quite so academic and came up short. Anyway, comb filter - a short delay line, tuned to a specific frequency. You can create this resonant ringing effect (like a stretched-out tabla membrane) using positive or negative feedback. Negative feedback, which is achieved by simply inverting the signal being fed back, emphasizes odd harmonics so it sounds more square-y. "Tewe" sounds more saw-y so I think it's positive feedback. Based on the delicate texture, I think they also put another filter or EQ in the feedback chain. Probably a common practice.

See also: Karpluss-Strong synthesis.

Oh yeah, and duh, the signal they were feeding into it in the first place to agitate the filter - that percussion sounds familiar. Could be samples they had laying around from previous albums, otherwise it has that kind of gritty sampled-acoustic sound that a lot of the percussion on Chiastic Slide has. I keep thinking sampled RY30 but someone got pissed off at me for making that assumption before.

:spiteful:

Yeah... When I listen to Tewe I can't help but head nod as if I'm listening to a bangin' hip hop track... lots of autechre do that for me. When I djayed in the late 90s I dropped this track a lot.

I KNOW, right?

I swear it's all over their stuff from probably Tri Rep / Anvil Vapre to LP5ish. Especially the first 2 tracks of Cichlisuite, they even pitch down the agogo to make that silly cooing sound. Oh and on We R Are Why . Are Y Are We? they even use it for the melodic stuff - Are Why = RY, get it?

But yeah I'm not about to get in another gaddam argument about it.

Ah, Tewe. I remember buying the Chiastic Slide import 12 years ago at an indie record shop for 27 bucks. And this track was almost all I'd listen to that summer. Dunno what it was about it, but it got me hooked.
