I liked Red Cabin. It was hilarious and as you said it's not meant to be anything more than a stupid teenage horror flick. Plus, his upcoming movie is a zombie flick:

Cell:

  Quote
When a strange signal pulsates through all cell phone networks worldwide, it starts a murderous epidemic of epic proportions when users become bloodthirsty creatures, and a group of people in New England are among the survivors to deal with the ensuing chaos after.

It's going to be fantastic!

UUUUH! I think the torturing is about to begin!

*cough* Stephen King *cough*

Yeah, I know... I was just hoping I could start another WATMM-Zombie-Fest :)

From that list I've actually only seen The Thing and The Fog, so if I were to watch another Carpenter movie which one should it be? I've heard lots good things about Escape from New York...

i think we both know that 'they live' is a masterpiece and 'hostel' is a a mere amusement,,

Yeah I do, hence 'TMMT' being mediocre but decent in its entertainment factor....

It is no 'They Live' and I do like 'Hostel 1 and 2' much more.....

but I thought it has some interesting cinematography and too much cgi gore...

the storyline is what I enjoyed the most....

Like a very violent 'Tales from The Darkside'.......

my Thai roommate of last semester recommended me this movie after seeing my girlfriend and I watching Audition. never got around to it, but i'm definitely gonna give this a try. Asian horror in general is unusually grotesque.. makes you wonder about the societal implications and what the trend really reflects upon

I bought it not long back. After seeing loads of J-Horrors beforehand it really took the effect of Shutter away for me. I liked it, but I didn't find it scary at all. However, when I first watched The Eye, that put the shits up me. I recently watched it though and it just did nothing for me... Fear wise at least.

I've been reading this thread back and I'm going to speak out in favour of Hostel by way of a small review. I bought the Hostel box set (well... duo) for pretty cheap after not having seen it before but hearing so much about how disgusting and uncomfortably brutal it is and really expected a journey into hell.. so to speak. But what I got was more of a satire (for the first one) and a piece of shit (the second). I didn't expect much really, as I'm not really a big fan of the bear Jew.

The reason I like Hostel is because it does something that horror films don't really do anymore, it takes an idea that absolutely mortifies you and runs with it- the idea of being kidnapped and waking up strapped to a chair in a warehouse ready to be tortured is one of the most terrifying things I can think of. It's the same as what made Saw a hit, it took an idea that could feasibly happen and put it on screen. It's the idea of it that makes people go crazy and I think that's why so many people went mad over Hostel, because it isn't actually THAT violent. I mean, the violence is mostly in the end scenes and you might notice that the deaths are mostly off screen anyway (ironically it's when the protagonist kills people that it's shown in vivid detail, as opposed to the antagonists). The brutal nature of the horror wasn't actually that surprising to me, I mean it's just how fear as been represented in cinema in recent times, in the 80's it was more terrifying to have an unstoppable, unkillable monster like Freddy, Jason, Mike Myers or the Terminator. In the 90's horror favoured semi realistic every-man slasher flicks like Scream (though that was more of a comedy) - you know the films I mean, the ones where on the dvd cover you have the main characters faces looking at you or looking around suspiciously (like this). In the 2000's horror films leant more towards sorta kidnap scenarios where the characters are completely helpless. It just tickles our sense of fear I guess and as we get more used to one type of horror movie (or any genre really) they step it to a new style. Basically that's me complaining about the tag 'torture porn'.

I'm not saying it's an amazing film of course, far from it. I wish it could have made up its mind, because it tried to be a really intense horror in a couple of scenes, then it turns into a schlock gore flick at the end with hilarious deaths (running over the three people he just happened to come across) and of course the beginning comes across more like an American pie-esque teen movie.

I suppose if bear Jew went with a really simple horror that just stayed with the torture warehouse vibe and was pitch black it wouldn't have gotten such a mainstream release, which he wanted so he could earn some green.

So there's me defending Hostel.... Let's have some more horror movies!!

Recently I fell in love with Martyrs (a film which left me feeling upset - it's very affecting). Highly recommended.
