i've been getting into making noises with my voice (or whatever) a lot more recently. even started singing to myself around the house; feel a definite pull to get more into it.

guess i appreciate the immediacy.

For as long as I can remember, I've been meaning to do this thing where I beatbox a beat out of my head for the immediacy of it, record it and then recreate it with drums and software. Still haven't gotten around to it, but I'm convinced it could lead to some Modeselektor-like shit in terms of detail.

I love this thread.

1) Amon Tobin - Verbal. Seems to me he took some MC's rap and reconstructed it to have the same rhythmic flow, but with no actual words used.

2) Try converting drum patterns into nonsense phrases that give you back the sound/cadence when you read them aloud to yourself. It's a good way to remember things/traverse possible permutations.

I saw a plug that did that once. You could beat box and have the plug recognize certain frequency ranges and convert them to different midi note events. pretty cool. I'm sure it would be easily done in PD.

if your determined, theres nothing you can make using theory that cant make without having ever even looked at it. theory probably just lets you get the ideas transcribed a little more fluently.

exarctly

That's only true up to a point. Yes things can be done instinctively whether it's simple rock songs or even complex jazz chords (depending on your natural talent) you're writing and the best musicians almost always have this instinct in abundance but certain very complex ideas simply can't be heard in their exact form in your head, Xenakis is an obvious example of someone who often didn't know exactly what a piece was going to sound like until he heard it performed/ realized on a computer. But less theoretical and more instinctual artists can certainly benefit from a solid grounding in musical theory, not necessarily the most elementary tonal theory but perhaps the musical discoveries made after music was revolutionised by the likes of schoenberg, bartok, stravinsky etc.

I remember reading an interview with elliott carter and he pretty much summed it up in a quote which i've forgotten so i'll paraphrase; People who think they're eschewing convention by ignoring the traditions of the past will almost certainly produce the most conventional, derivative music without knowing it. It's good to know what the rules are before you try breaking them.

Basically if you start from square one you're pretty much reinventing the wheel and if you're expecting to come up with something new you'll have to quickly cycle through hundreds of years of musical innovation before you even get started.

Having said that, theres nothing to stop you writing a fantastic tune totally by ear, it may even be interesting but the thread's titled "innovative creative ideas" which is what i mean.
