Is it worth buying expensive headphones?

So I'm fed up of shitty little earphones made for the IPOD age, my favorite types of music don't suit crappy bassless earphones, you lose half the experience of dubstep, trance and seen as though I'm on these boards Autechre's music as well. I've heard AE's music on quality soundsystems and it sounds so much better, also I make tunes at night sometimes and I need better headphones to hear what I'm actually making.

My question is are headphones like the 'AKG K 701' that approach 200 quid actually worth it?

if you want headphones for home listening and making music, go for the alessandro ms-1s.

if you want earphones for listening while outside, i recommend a set of canalphones, sennheiser make some nice ones.

but basically - depends on how much of an audiophile you are i guess.

I would rather have good headphones than spend twice as much on a speaker system for sure, so much more immersion in listening to music through quality headphones IMO. I dont give a fuck if mixing with headphones is a bit misleading you can really good results if you understand how headphones fuck with your perception of stereo panning etc.

i'd say not really. compared to proper speakers then headphones always suck. the more you spend in general the better they sound but it's still not that great. if there exists a pair of headphones that comes anywhere close to using monitors then i've never heard them. i've recentlyish moved from a pair of sennheisers (595s i think?) to beyerdynamic dt990s and while the new ones are better they still have very very lumpy sound, the mid lacks a bit and i basically end up tweaking the EQ to get them acceptable. they do however reproduce bass pretty damned nicely and are supremely comfortable. i expect there is better out there but it's dimishing returns- another 100 quid might get me something only a tiny % more accurate. the sweet spot for 'worth it' value i reckon is about 100quid or so, anything more and it's only worth it if you have cash to throw around and really want the extra (tiny) improvements.

...actually this is talking about sound not build quality, in which case maybe it is worth it but there are some fragile and plasticy headphones out there that cost a fortune too.

This sentence evoked a mental image of me handing a Magnavox speaker a dollar.

it's worth buying good headphones. do your research and you can find something more than good enough for around $100.
