Options for selling trax?

Recommended Posts

Hey hathathat. I enjoy the 3 tracks you put up, particularly Lonely Old Lou. It sounds like you flanged the fuck out of everything, which gives your music an awesome kind of care-free mood.

have you thought about selling your stuff commercially? know Getty images has an audio part now. I bet you'd have pretty good chance of getting some bites that way...if you want to sell your soul a little.

you seriously think i could make money on that?? do they take the ©opyright? i want to be able to sign these tracks to a label if i ever feel it's right, i want to be able to sample them, etc. on that note, i might have a few uncleared snares in there or something... nothing like recognizable song bits, i stick to drum hits really! but i've downloaded a lot of drum kits off the 'net over the years.. chopped up breaks... i dunno what the deal there is if you go srsly commercial.

in any case, i have no moral qualms about licensing my trax for commercial purposes -- really would feel worse about charging fellow starving musicians for albums than fat corporate wallets for 30sec of audio.

however, i'm skeptical i can break into it easily.... for example, i'm a decent photographer. two weeks ago, i tried uploading some photos to microstock sites. got the big zip. not that i'm bad, there's just a lot of competition, and my camera is only 4MP, barely cuts the mustard for such work. on the other hand, i AM much better at music than photography -- and much more, er, developled. but, frankly, if any jerk can just go to Getty and upload mp3s then i doubt anyone will find me in the tsunami of uploads i'm sure they get.

p.s. -- i used photoshop, but it was pretty freehand yea :)

it's just like you don't give a fuck as the imaginary audience follows every step you take

ya there are lots of places where you can license yo shit and still keep the rights to it. Shitty rock bands sell shit for Volkswagen commercials all the time.

people are always looking for some "techno" music for shit. I'd prefer to hear something decent in the bg of a phone sex radio ad personally.

care to name a few such places for me, possibly over PM? i looked at getty and didn't see any obvious way to make my stuff available...

you heard any of the porn trax that matmos did?

i think if you put more time into your music and just be patient, it will eventually be so good that it will sell itself and you dont have to run around everywhere trying to get people to listen to your stuff. thats what im doing anyway

another way i know how to get signed, is to create a wicked new sound that isnt necessarily amazing but it has to sound new. i think this is how venetian snares got noticed. he went from bedroom producer to planet mu in a relevantly short time, and the only reason it happened was because he was making good music that sounded like nothing else. same goes with afx but like 20 years ago

I'M SORRY FOR BEING ME I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I AM

i'm going to put blood sweat tears in my music no matter what. if you don't try hard until you start thinking $$$, then you shouldn't be in music. really, i'd call my music-writing COMPULSIVE. i'm not even sure if i enjoy it, really. lot of all-day sessions where it's... "i'll take a break when i finish this... and this... and this..."

wanting to sell/license trax is essentially saying -- i'm gonna do this shit anyways, i may as well try and cash in.

vsnares got on planet mu when mike paradinas found GREG HATES CAR CULTURE in a record store. so, i wager he'd been going a while at that point, as he already had records fucking pressed before paradinas ever heard of him.

labels are fast becoming dinosaurs. think about that, you cunts.

i can sell downloads and commercial licensing rights by setting up a folding table + rax in my living room?

porn music linky? HA.

It could be cool actually to set up a booth as an experiment so to speak. Just blast the shit out of your stuff in a public place. Some really tourist ridden par of town. I bet you'd sell some cd's. Even more if your dressed like a robot.

somebody set us up the booth

okay, i can foresee a number of problems with this:

1) i am not a salesmen. not an on-the-street one, anyways.

2) there are laws, you have to get permits, etc. to sell shit on the street like that. i'd probably get kicked off or arrested within an hour, especially if i set up in a city area.

3) robots aren't really a theme of my music, and dressing up as a tree would be too silly.

i think i actually have the videos as well, but i'm not sure if any of it is on my laptop... i'll send you what i find when i find it.

no not really. but the craft fair someone idea suggested earlier is really not bad at all. people go to craft fairs pretty open-mindedly and you could probably do well with a decent boom box.

the spirit of my post was more 'you have to go to them, they may not know to come to you' type of thing. i think that's usually more effective to do in person.
