i think most people would rather be emotionally traumatized than dead, and its not like being attacked and beaten within an inch of your life isnt also emotionally traumatizing. There's plenty of things you can to to people in video games that would traumatize a person but doesnt kill them.

see i dont think ANYONE is going to play a game like this unless they really want to and know what theyre getting into, and these are the kind of people that are already completely desensitized to these things.

A person who doesnt play video games could think the same thing about killing someone in a game, that it alters the player emotionally. But most likely theyre only going to play these violent games if they are the kind of person that would enjoy it.

There's an interesting discussion about the taboo of sex in entertainment vs violence in entertainment somewhere in here.

Basically a game is a challenge or obstacle that you overcome through an action. Thus, through the simple Pavlovian mechanism of offering a reward for an action, regardless of what that reaction or reward is, it glorifies the action taking place. The whole "it's just a game!" argument neglects the fact that games where you have to shoot to win are pro-murder, just as games where you have to rape to win are pro-rape.

That being said, it'll be interesting to see what a shithole the world is when all the adults running it were raised on Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto as 14 year olds instead of relatively harmless things like Sonic the Hedgehog.

but it glorifies the action within a certain context. Are kids who grew up in the 80s-90s hungry for fruit from playing pacman? Do people get urges to force people to wet themselves from playing the sims? Maybe they have strong subconscious urges to collect gold coins/rings and jump on people's heads because it was glorified in a simluated scenario they participated in? Why do video games only promote things when those things are taboo? People arent going to be lawless murderers in the future because people are intelligent and can recognize the difference between the context of a virtual world and the context of the real world they and other people exist in.
