Richie Hawtin Traktor setup

You may or may of not seen the vid, but i found it really interesting. What is debatable is whether it is actually djing? It isnt in a traditional sense but the way he does it is what i thought dj's did like 16 years ago, i thought they were making the actual music, using the equipment like an instrument, masterfully blending records and twisting nobs to create the musical output.

I disagree with some of the thing he says about placing vinyl on a deck having to seek through it to find parts to mix etc because that is what gives me a buzz when playing out, trying bang a record in at fast pace seamlessly mixing them together.

djing to me is made fun by trying to keep things going without any mistake and the element of suprise. And i also dont like the idea that u only rely on your creative button pressing on the fly where nothing really can go wrong, especially with all the syncing tools and stuff.

But sonically the new ways of djing are really good to listen to and only as good as the persons ideas, there more like live sets.

hawtin is one of those guys who really embraces new technology and then goes on to see what creative way he can use them. props to him.

Is there a DJ app that can run as a VST? I really would love to cue up Traktor in Cubase and then scratch samples along to my original track. I know I can render to .wav and then do this within Traktor itself, but I want to record the Traktor bits as their own audio files so I can further manipulate them. I don't want to render the whole thing already mixed so i can't alter the Traktor parts.

one solution would be to run your original track in your DAW or whatever, then simultaneously do your scratching in Traktor and record it in traktor. this will give you a recording of just your scratchy whatnots which you could then wack into your DAW and do with them as you please no?

having said that, you're gonna need a midi controller with scratchy whatsits, cause otherwise, the potential for emulating scratching in traktor with a mouse is somewhat limited no?

Yeah thanks, Luddster. I think that's the best work around. Maybe a little awkward, but it should work.

as for the midi controller, I'm going to get that Numark Total Control i've been fancying.

I really liked the looping in Traktor when I was using it. He's not doing too good a job in that video. When I moved over to Ableton, it was one of the only things I really missed. Traktor is far too unpredictable for me. BPM's halfing, tracks impossible to get in sync without constant edging sometimes, I used it for years and never got to grips with some of it's problems.

i am pretty sure the new version of traktor has a vastly improved synching.

people say that with every new version of traktor

but it still acts weird sometimes unless you're djing straight 4/4 techno like richie is

All the syncing talk is exactly what i dont like about digital mixing. I dont see the fun or skill in it at all.

I can't necessarily speak for others but i think something like Ableton easily matches the fluidity of what is being done here, without the restrictions of tempos, genres or time signatures. (i've never actually got into Traktor)

Personally i just find it a huge buzz to have that much freedom.
