Personally i just find it a huge buzz to have that much freedom.

plus you can use it to go beyond what you could do with turntables. like a hierarchy of needs-kind of thing.. if you don't have to worry about beat-matching, it frees you up to do more.

Surgeon is the fucking Don. Absolutely incredible live, but I haven't the foggiest idea what he uses

Gotta be Ableton I would of thought. Would be amazed if it was anything else.

I do seem to remember seeing some sort of touch screen MIDI controller that looked like an app. in itself....

its fun to have that much freedom but at the expense of the sound quality. too often i hear people do abelton sets that are very dithered/granulated and time stretched sounding unintentionally from taking source tempos too far away from how fast they originally were

true, unless you change the stretch setting to move the pitch up with the tempo

if you could use melodyne's stretching algorithm with live's interface it would be a lot better.

thats correct, but its strange i dont hear people doing this very often. Its much more common to hear something being time stretched to the brink than an actual resample

I don't understand why people djing with ableton wouldn't use the pitch function. It sounds lame as fuck otherwise.
