J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid

it just surprises me that not many people here have a problem with a record coming out every 6 months by someone who has been dead for quite a while.

only people whose ears are broken would not detect it

ok i'll buy that, but even if your ears are functioning correctly how would you know if Dilla had intended to release a certain beat and it wasnt finished yet? It just seems a little weird to be listening to some really talanted dead musicians unfinished works being presented as 'finished' when you as a listener really have no way of knowing and going completely on it based on faith.

how would you know? because first off these beats come from beat tapes he gave to friends and mc's. if you've heard any of his beat tapes you'd know that any of the beats throughout the years that ended up being used are exactly like the beat tape versions only extended. all these beats you hear coming out on other people records (doom, q-tip, etc) are the same deal - he was trying to get people to pick the beat up and enjoy them + they are just like the beat tape versions. exactly what's happening.

short story: dilla didn't make "unfinished beats" only shortened versions for tapes, but all the elements were still there.

edit - i just realized you may not have heard any of the tapes i refer to so in that case you'd just have to take the above statements at my word (or not)

Alright, everyone who's a hater about these posthumous dilla releases needs to SHUT THE FUCK UP RIGHT NOW. ok the shining was ok, kinda shitty, and who knows who really put those tracks together. But this track is FUCKIN RIDICULOUS! And we wouldn't be hearing black thought rip over an insane beat if it wasn't for this release. So any haters need to realize that hip-hop is going down the drain faster and faster all the time. And if we can get releases like this, even if it is from a man who passed on, arranged by people who actually know what they are doing like pete rock, THEN LET IT HAPPEN UNTIL THE FUCKEN END OF TIME!

By the way, who else thinks it's fuckin awesome that an artist like dilla can be defined by just a single sound, IE the siren sound. I thought it was gonna just be a donuts thing. But now that I think about it, tt's so much more original than having a producer shout all over a track or some kind of voice audio stamp, instead you just got this siren which lets anyone who listens to underground rap know it's dilla time.

Wasn't Swizz Beats trying to jack this for a minute? I seem to remember like a year or two after Dilla's death he had a song or two with that sound in it. Even the beats sounded Dilla-esque. Just another reason for me not to like Swizz Beats...

Good beat, decent rapping. Not as cool as reality check, but I'm more pumped for the instrumentals anyways, and if we can get a couple more bomb rap tracks mixed with pete rocks mixing it should be dandy fine indeed. heres hoping fopr the best rap record of the year. BTW if you listen(scroll) all way till the end of the track you can hear the whole "radio" concept in full effect.

I can confirm as well, although I don't recall the songs he used it on. They must have been singles, as I heard on the radio/saw the videos.

Haven't found anything online yet, myself. Shit is bananas, right?

I listened to it on the way home... rapping was garbage though dooms track was alright. Beats are dope though but that is a given.

After listening to the sampler, you can tell Pete Rock was really feeling his super digitized 80's sounding beats, the sound he perfected with Royce Da 5'9''s Let's Grow. Super Sleak. Not the organic Tribe and Slum Village sound I fell in love with, or the more commercial Common/Roots, and Pharcyde work. But still a great side of Dilla I can't wait to hear more of.

Really Loving it though. The raps aren't amazing, some really good. But hey, thats the standard you face yourself with when listening to a producing god.

Alright so Listening to it right now. and I gotta say I'm loving IT! Totally worth the wait, best shit thats been released in Jays name since donuts for sure. 10000000 leagues ahead of Jay Love Japan and The Shining. The Instrumentals are totally digitized with a pristine shine unmatched by any other producer in rap. They are so tight, and the use of synths and 80's samples is outtttta this world. The Rap tracks have been way above my expectations. You can tell Pete Rock really dug to find raps that could meet the standards of the tracks. Only huge letdown so far was the havoc and raekwon track, was expecting much more, beatwise and rapwise. Also the Doom track is painfully short and not anything really good to say about it. But other than that, the raps have sick beats and the rappers hold their own. Plus alot of beat mixing on the rap tracks, pete does an awesome job, especially on Blood sport, where the beat changes up halfway thru ala Gazzilion ear.

And anyone afraid of the whole radio concept with Pete Rock talking his face off over tracks don't worry. he shows up like once every 4-6 tracks to just say "yo this is a dilla appreciation...." to that extent. BTW the so called "radio" concept doesn't really come off as that at all. basically just sounds like creative mixing with a rough edge to it. Nothing special, but still fun to listen to. Not what I expected anyways.

LONG LIVE DILLA

I gave it a second listen and still can't get over the rapping... it's terrible. What exactly did you like about the rap bits AOO?

I thought Blu's rapping and Black thoughts were the best. I am not a Frank-n-dank fan. I think Frank nitty is a pretty horrible rapper. But whenever I hear him I am reminded of Mcnasty Filth from Jaylib and I get all excited so his voice brings me back. Doom didnt even really rap. And the other guys weren't amazing, but they complemented the beats well enough. Plus I said I didn't like the Havoc and Raekwon track. Also you might not no who lil fame is, but he is one of the most well known underground MC's from New york from the group MOP. And a very good hardcore rapper, one of the best, plus his beat is crazy. I honestly think you calling the rapping terrible is a sign your more of a j dilla beat fan. Cause they are perfectly adequate. You need to listen to way more rap if you think this rapping is "terrible". You'll see what really is terrible right away.

I guess I over exaggerated... I have heard much much worse, I guess I just hold high standards for his beats especially now since they are diminishing little by little with every release.I'm not a fan at all for hardcore rap so my opinion is pretty biased... but even for the tracks I was really looking forward to, likes Blu's for instance... just didn't do it for me.

Fair enough and I understand your desperation for his last beats to be filled with great performances. But I guarantee all the big name stars that worked with him still have some bomb ass beats that they will rap over later. think of how many beats Common must have! Just check out Move from Q-tips new record The Renaissance. I bet Tip has loads of those beats.

Also I think what really needs to be done is Mixtape DJ's and guys like Pete Rock need to make new mixtapes with J dilla beats from anything from Donuts to Jay Stay Paid. Then take those, put new talent and established talent over his beats and mix them in with other rap artists and other producers works from today. then we will be able to see how dillas beats really stand out in the mix. Thats the way his status will live on and have new fans born.

I think it is the Swizz Beats Song, It's me Bitches. Has the exact same siren sound

I actually like this song. Really fun production, just as weird as he could make it.

Even though I heard most of the beats before (hahahahaha THIEF), I love the mastered versions of them, and most of the raps here aren't too bad. Doom's verse was absymal to say the least, but there were many gems from the rappers. That being said, Milk Money is now one of my favorite Dilla beats. I heard it on the Jaylib Inst. Vol. 2 bootleg, but mastered....woo.
