there's nothing offensive about this because disabled people are less able in sports.

plus the idea of special Olympics bowling is humourous. i've always wondered, does the special Olympics have curling?

it's incredibly offensive. making fun of the defenseless is one of the worst things a person can do.

that being said, it's also important to take things in context and not be offended as a knee jerk reaction to everything you hear. it was a horribly stupid gaffe, but it doesn't mean that Obama thinks less of people with disabilities. however, it is particularly offensive because we're all so supposed to be so sensitive about race and not make any offhand remarks. in my opinion, this is worse than a racial remark because because black people can defend themselves.

I think it was a fairly horrible gaffe, but it was misrepresented at first. He was reacting to the crowd and Leno's mocking applause. When I first heard about this story, I thought he just went off on a tangent and compared his skills to the special olympics (eg. the title of this thread) which is inaccurate to say the least.

though retards deserve comfort and dignity like everyone else, i have a problem with referring to a burbling sack of downs as an "athlete." really, some guy overcoming incredible odds to do... something my fat ass could do ten times over. i don't really see why i should celebrate this.
