I think the only real advantage to reason is that you can use it AS a Vst plug in...

since when can you load up Reason as a VST plugin? never heard of this capability

as far as i know Fruityloops and Plogue Bidule are the only host sequencers also loadable as a VST in other hosts

IMO Ableton + Reason rewired together is the best solution out there, simply because Reason seems to be the best app for drum programming.

You don't need to keep switching the audio source— just set Reason to monitor "IN" in ableton so you can always hear it.

I do all of the drums in Reason— the drum editing environment is unbeatable (either in the MIDI sequence lane or on the machine itself)... then you can throw a bit of saturation over the Reason track in ableton.

i could definitely see you personally preferring Reason for drum programming but come on, unbeatable? its just a freaking piano roll with a 16 step sequencer option very standard among many DAWs

you could give a retard a stradavarius violin and it wouldnt sound anywhere near as a good as a pro playing a broken 20 quid junk yard violin.

Guest welcome to the machine

I would certainly not say that reason drum editing is unbeatable! the logic combination of the hyper editor (kind of like a super flexible old school sequencer that can automate every knob you see as well) with a normal piano roll and loads of editing options seals the deal for me.

I think what newmac was referring to was rewire, i used to rewire reason to cubase loads and to all intents and purposes it was just a vst i was running in cubase, albeit with a different way of setting it up.

that would make sense, but if he was then Reason still has no 'real advantage' in that regard because quite a few DAW programs can be rewired in the exact same way. Fruity Loops on the other hand actually can be called up in any DAW without running rewire as a VST instrument.<--- obviously im really impressed by this hehe
