is it hard for you to title tracks/releases?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I have several pages in my planner dedicated to my steadily growing list of track and album titles. I keep it with me most of the time because I always come up with good track titles at the most random times.

Whenever I make music I know exactly what my song is about, so I usually just name it based on that. For example, I have this track I made about this person I used to jam with, who would basically drop crap sequences and so on until his part is completely unintelligible, and I would stop making any sounds, and he'd be like "Is that you?" so the track is called "Is That You" Lol. Occasionally the name is really personal, in which case I abbreviate it (such as a track I'm working on now called "YHBM".

In terms of album names, it's rather easy, since I usually have an idea for the entire album as well. Most of the time I make the name before the first track has been done, but sometimes I start a new unnamed project and only decide on the name a few tracks in. I made an EP in the last few months last year, and I didn't want it to have some sort of bullshit name so I just titled it "EP 2008.12".

I think that if you have trouble naming tracks, you should probably go back to thinking about how you go about making the track, and maybe having some sort of base as to what the track is about (even if it's completely instrumental).

basically the way i created my track names, with feeling and emotion, it's not the proper way to do it. people don't want their electronic emo, unless they like n american electronic :p. but yeah, this thing that's happening hear on the forum and off it, this idm braindance, people that listen to it would rather see really random cryptic track tiles, get a random word generator

a lot of my track titles are either things i've heard on talk radio, movies, forum discussions, science programs, etc. i take the phrases and change the words up a bit or i just leave as is. other track names just pop into my head somehow. i usually come up with an album title and not talk about it to anyone until i'm almost done with the album. i have a name picked out for the next album and i have a working title for a future one if i decide to do another.

i also use terms from the navy or military that aren't really spoken about in the civilian world (ie. oblique formation, red right return, belay my last, etc.)

I always use the Random Song Title Generator, best tool ever.

I used the Random word generator for a track title once. I probably will again. I've noticed though, that it is easier to focus on composing any given song when I have the title beforehand.

this too i do!

I like to write down suitable phrases that I find when I'm reading. It's no real hassle considering that I usually take notes anyways.

how do you come up with your titles?

ok ok, IRARI, you deserve a more serious answer.

my main name for music, NEVENEN, is a middle english verb meaning roughly

1) to say, tell, express, esp. the truth

2) to name (as in give something a name).

i can be borderline superstitious about getting the name right... presuming i didn't pick one from the get-go. there's all that old-school legendary shit about gods creating stuff by uttering its name. the name guides people to a specific area of thought, perhaps leading into the track before the listener has even pressed play.

that aside, i'm not above naming a track LOL BUTTS or something because it makes me giggle. i just wouldn't do that for my magnum opus.

edit: i recall a story about how the name drexciya came about......

but wouldn't naming your magnum opus LOL BUTTS be the biggest lol of all? Imagine if AFX named Mt st michels ect "Anal Doucher" or something similarly retarded. It would be marvelous.

I randomly hit my keyboard, string together random words or name them after different kinds of beer.

haha i did the beer thing alot when i still had my drum machines, mostly czech beers..

i usually try to make words that sound pleasing and create nice colors.. green and blue colors mostly.. i don't like german sounding stuff, F's, W, hard consonants.. vibes like cellar door.. can be complete gibberish as long as it sounds nice..

also like to make titles in swedish, usually single words.
