culturally relevant IDM blog 2009

Recommended Posts

inspired by carles (hipsterrunoff.com) and the state of the IDM economy today, i was thinking we should create a blog to blog about IDM things and music. like the latest 'most IDM thing 2k9' tournament. we should have had hour by hour commentary on that. but it would jus start there would be no explanations, not defining IDM at all and just 'accepting it without question' would be nice. there is so much potential with this concept, but I was thinking mainly we need to have some kind of gimmick/presence. perhaps something like highdeas.com or more streams of conciousness instead of hipstertalk. if staples is still open later i might go buy a whiteboard in order to brainstorm all these ideas out.

who's the most IDM person in the world? history?recently? who would be up for helping out with this? with our potential combined, this could be the most awesome for 'regular people' to understand what IDM is about without actually defining IDM

IDM is from the future and needs our help to survive

this could be so amazing/hilarious/IDM i'm definitely not going to sleep tonight working on this

this is going to actually exist in reality though, outside of watmm. i mean regular people would read it.

already have one person onboard ready to write reviews of top40 RAP albums from an IDM perspective. don't know if he wants to be named or what yet. working on blog designs right now...

In all seriousness, what kind of responses are you expecting to get here?

i dont mean to sound impertinent but theres a geographic divide here. idm itself is an american term which is at odds with the nature of eclectic electronic music from the homeplace. i'd like to see the blogging of someone who traverses the uk experiencing things as it is here. it'd dispel alot of the wank floating around and just generally be beneficial to the "idm" community in well, 'keepin it real'. the whole idm 'scene' thing feels like an aphex moonshine media hangover with the flappy trappings of vaguely ridiculous american fanboyism.

right now there's a lot things happening and things said which probably don't reach people until it's flogged or distributed on bleep. and most of the people who are able to offer genuinely interesting insight are too busy doing things behind the scenes - the fruits of those labours eventually reaching everyone both organically and beautifully. its a big umbrella in which the pitchfork/earstroke nomenclature thrives but the spirit also survives.

basically, things are stirring, and have been for a while, all across the world. what with the current state of the music industry, and lets get all obama on this shit, were at a crucial juncture. the "idm" email list is at an all time low etc.. but people who listen to decent music is perhaps at an all time high. its a new age of er 'braindance' in effect.

so... a blog would be nice, but can you do it right?

What do you plan on incorporating into this IDM blog?

Is it gonna be announcements of albums and live shows?

Is it gonna be album reviews? (please god no)

Is it gonna be discussion of underground, otherwise unknown acts?

What is even considered IDM these days? Isn't it a category that exists to describe a type of music that has defied description?

Wasn't IDM only really culturally relevant in the 90's, until its soundscapes got incorporated into just about every other genre out there?

Is 65 Days of Static IDM?
