  1. 1. Should the Monthly Remix Competition carry on?

Recommended Posts

So the WATMM Monthly Remix Competition has got as far as Round 4, but the last two rounds have not been particularly successful - we've had a number of good quality tracks but not many people entering. Round 2 was pretty cool though.

Are people enjoying downloading and listening to the tunes? Or is it all getting a bit lame?

Does it matter that only a few tracks get submitted?

Should I carry on putting in my couple-of-hours-per-month on this? Or give it a rest?

Do the rules need to change?

All comments welcome.

I think it should continue, however I think it should reside in General Banter and I don't see the point in anonymity.

yes yes it should continue like it is, but yes maybe on general banter, maybe even someday ill submit one.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

it should continue, it just needs to pick up the pace, we had like what, 3 months for the last submission? im fallin asleep here.

fuck off!

Yes, but it should ACTUALLY be monthly (like announce on the 1st, deadline is 25th, 5 days of voting, announce winner along with new track & restart on the 1st), and you should pick better tracks to remix. Something with more remix potential like acapellas or ambient songs or something.

i like the idea, but it might need a break for p168 and antarctica comp.

keep the source tracks varied and challenging and different people will have a crack.

maybe announce the source track in the subject line of a gb post at the start of each comp, so people who like that track will duck into ekt and check it out.

it might be worth asking some of the more popular EKT track makers why they havent entered yet...

no, thats boring

the point in anonymity was to help deal with WATMM's apparent inability to extricate the more popular members from their artist aliases.

it levels the playing field on a sociological level, because the preconceptions or opinions about a member cannot affect the objective evaluation of the tracks.

in my opinion, anyway.

The choice of source track is very important because it determines who will be motivated enough to enter. Here's an idea:

I like the current system where the winner has the 'prize' of choosing the next source track. (We dont have any other prizes to give)

but

If everyone could choose source tracks collaboratively (with a poll or something) we might get more entries

so how about:

The winner of each round chooses a shortlist of 3 or 4 tracks, and then everyone votes for which track from the shortlist should be the next source track.

I have a hunch this might generate more enthusiasm. What do ya reckon?

yeah, it might generate more enthusiasm.. but then that's more voting, which just takes longer to get the whole thing going. might be too much hassle? also, it keeps people on their toes, so to speak, if the last winner picks an unexpected/interesting song.. it's kinda like, if you wanna participate you gotta use this track,, might push people out of their usual routine/style and come up with some cool stuff. i really think the current system works best.

will definitely take a week off for p168 (next week)

but the antarctica comp runs until May 31st ... how should we work around that?

Let it continue.

Make Joyrex sticky it and put it somewhere with more traffic (I completely spaced the Techno City one, and I use the new posts button so that shouldn't sneak by). Make a separate face page for downloading past remixes comps that is independent of the forum.

Lower the deadline, two months tops.

Let people nominate/vote for which track to remix rather than winner picks. I get the impression the winners like to pick stuff to chuff everyone else and make it hard to 'top' the last one, although Techno City was a great pick - probably the only source track that I had any interest in. Availability of source track is also important. The suggestions above could work, but I keith sweat to god I quit if we do the beach boys again. Personally I think the tracks should be relevant to electronic music in some manner...Otherwise if I ever win I'm nominating a fucking austrian yodel track.

Maybe a alternative to the above suggestion:

Let the public nominate and vote on top 5 tracks, let the winner pick from the top 5 nominations.
