open up Terminal and type

  Quote

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

press return, then type

  Quote

killall Dock

and press return again. If you want to change back at some point, type in the first command but change the "YES" to "NO," press return, and then do another "Killall Dock."
