the 2nd song 'prepare your coffin' almost made me ejaculate

sounds like tortoise doing prog rock

yeah shit, it reminds me of los endos by genesis or something, hot damn!

.. that said though, maybe it'll take a few more listens to get into but upon first listen i found it a little disappointing. i much prefer when tortoise do the super-melodic surf/spaghetti western style stuff (of which there is a minimal amount here) to their more experimental tracks. just seems like a lot of this is just a bunch of ideas thrown together.

also, i find it funny how a lot of people who are getting boners over this album dismiss bands like pivot who are quite similar in concept to tortoise (post-rock/surf/jazz guitar, jazzy drums, electronics, etc).

maybe has something to do with idm fans recognising pivot as another lame indie band responsible for destroying warp records?

the new Grizzly Bear makes me proud to be a Warp Records head, but I agree with about Maximo Park, !!!, and Gravenhurst.......

not music that I listen to ever....

have given it all a try but not my thing...

although !!! are interesting for a little while.....

it gets old, real fast!

holy shit

northern something = wobbler

(Bob Wilson) Sorry... you created that reality tunnel, you can find your way out... You built the Trap... you know the design better than anyone...sagatsfz3stage.jpg

i mostly agee. tracks 2 & 4 blew me the fuck away but the rest of the tracks on the album are kind of average and i miss the more clean wide stereo field production of TNT and yes the melodic surf uneffected guitar stuff was great as well. These days they use too much metal distortion on the guitar and smashed compression the drums i just prefer the less 'heavy' production sound.

i dismiss bands like Pivot because i frankly found their sound to to be biting a little too much from tortoise, although i like that other band Battles on warp. I don't tend to like very much post rock or stuff like Tortoise generally because i think very few bands do it as well as albums like TNT or Standards

well, their latest album was mixed by john mcentire from tortoise, so some similarity is inevitable.

and i agree in a way that there aren't many post rock albums that can beat TNT, that's one of my favourite post-rock albums of all time, and the first one i heard too!

As a whole I'm still not enjoying this as much as I hoped I would but "Gigantes" & "Charteroak Foundation" are up there with some of the best tracks of the year, absolutely fantastic. I just don't think it ebbs and flows too well together as a whole and some tracks are a bit throwaway, which is rare for them.

  • 4 weeks later...

yeah tnt is pretty freakin' excellent.

edit: the first two tracks on this album are amazing. why do all tortoise albums tend to start out really awesome and kinda peter out towards the end?
