Squarepusher [Numbers Lucent EP]

Recommended Posts

Squarepusher reviews are always awesome. Like when Go Plastic came out everyone was like "WTF?! 4/10"

I love how surprised SP fans are when he releases a new album and its not the same as the last.

I wasn't surprised that he had a different sounding album nor what stuff he can make. i love his experimental sound pieces on 'do you know sp'.

i just wasn't expecting i'd hear the kinda track like Illegal Dustbin. i've not heard him ever do that before.

This is kinda what most musicians do though. Artists in general first are in this state where they are just trying to figure out what a mic is and how it works, after years they perfect their sound, and thats when they start branching out in different directions and trying new things.

Someone as loony as SP could never stay in one spot for too long. It almost seemed natural on JAS that he'd try to use vocoders and develop a 1970s sound that could be played by a band. NL was his old school dnb album much like how he did Selection Sixteen, an old school acid album.

Thats a perfect example. I loved Huge Chrome Unfolding and could listen to it on repeat but I've honestly never really cared for anything else Venetian Snares has done. As such I don't discredit him as an artist as he is obviously a master of his craft. I think people should treat SP the same way, if he made an album you love then enjoy it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up on his next album being whatever it was that you loved.

splagwagaga .. i listen to his music day to day in my car. him not even being a fully commercial artist is impressive for the quality of music he outputs.

sadly the last few stuff i've heard has been going a bit emotional. Now, im all for this but its just not my taste and thats why i also really am pissed off with boxcutter doing the kind of melody stuff again.

to each their own but i can't help but think that the beats on his first album (boxcutters) were technically far superiour than his future albums - including his latest one.

but back on topic. yeah, squarepushers surprised me with this one and even though im not into it, i still appreciate his passion for trying different things.

think of how musically revered squarepusher would have been if he hadn't realized so many albums. If he only did say, FMWT, HND, MISRON, and Ultravistor... But because he has been so prolific the critics just love taring his shit apart when it comes to his comparing to his older work.
