you expect architects to build more efficient, better quality buildings over time, why not expect the same out of game designers?

because longer does not connotate better quality or more efficiency, to me it's mostly used to cover up for what is usually not too great of a game to begin with and they pile on all these achievements and long winded gameplay quests in order to make you forget about how truly banal and repetitive the game actually is. in short it is a distraction.

There were plenty of games for NES that took weeks to beat, they were called Role Playing Games.

This was something for me personally that always separated a role playing game from a normal video game, so from my perspective almost all new major release console games are essentially role playing games, its just really surreal. Its like how all the new scifi TV shows have continuing episodic stories so you can't just be a tourist and enjoy one episode you have to commit to the entire fucking series and even then you may not get a payoff

i think you just need to admit to yourself that you're officially an old man who doesn't get the newfangled vidya games the kids are into. ;)

tastes grow and mature and technology allows for more options. back in the day we were content to play a game where a frog jumped across the street and that was pretty much it. why? because that was the pinnacle of gaming at the time. that's literally the best you could get. you may disagree, but that kind of thing just doesn't do it for me anymore. and any kid picking up a game these days wouldn't be able to stand something so remedial for more than 5 minutes.

personally, i don't think there's much of a difference between mario bros. and gears of war. it's still the same shit - several levels to beat, within each level are obstacles to overcome and enemies to dispose of/avoid, throughout the levels you encounter bigger, badder enemies and variations of weaponry and in the end you save the proverbial princess. if anything, the little things they add just give you more freedom inside the virtual world. in mario bros. you could only go front, back, up, down. the only difference now is that you can stop and smell the goombas and explore to see what's behind the sewer pipes. now, since we know they can do more, we expect them to do more and when they don't it feels like a ripoff.

the average person isn't going to beat mario bros., mega man, zelda, etc. in 4 hours...it may take a few days, weeks or months of playing a few hours at a time. i expect to get at least that much gameplay out of a current game, if not more because that's become the standard. i don't expect every game to be 100+ hours like oblivion or fallout 3, but it doesn't hurt.

honestly, i think you've just outgrown the artform. if you consider fallout 3, gta4, bioshock, mass effect, halo, etc. to be banal, repetitive wastes of time then that's pretty much it because i've played them all and i think there's tons of redeeming qualities to those games and the most apparent is that they're only as repetitive as you make them. you don't have to do everything the same way, which is one of the best improvements to gaming in recent years. you can do what you want to do and if you get bored you can just switch it up. in effect, most games are not really "games" nowadays - they're virtual realities. you don't go there simply to press the A button in a perfectly timed fashion to get points, you go there to experience something you can't do in real life.

still, if i have done everything there is to do in a game in 4 hours, i'm not paying $60 for it unless it can somehow turn into a herd of asian pornstars.

get the orange box! Holy shit why has this not been mentioned? You get 5 games of incredibly quality.

Half life 2, plus the story expansions episode 1 and 2. All told this is easily 30 hours of solid gameplay. The storyline, gameplay, level design, and overall quality of the game is WAY higher than any fps or other game I have ever played to date.

The whole experience is rediculously cinematic at times, probably some of the most frantic intense action i've ever played in a game. For example, early on at one point you are being chased by a helicopter with an intense machine gun. Several points throughout a 3-4 level stretch you emerge from buildings/sewers to find the helecopter raining bullets down. You need to run from cover to cover as the hail of bullets will tear you apart in seconds.

So the single player game is fantastic in every possible way. It also comes with Portal and Team Fortress 2. Portal is a really awesome fps puzzle game where you shoot two different coloured portals onto walls/floors to solve momentum puzzles. I can't really do it justice but its a superb puzzler and its really really trippy.

Team fortress 2 is basically a souped up, polished version of team fortress classic. The cartoonish art style works really well, and its just an overall amazing team based game. Each of the 9 classes are very well rounded and specific to certain playing types, and the matches are very team based and generally not typical Deathmatch free-for-alls.

Anyways there's my shpeel. I can't even begin to tell you how awesome this game is. Get it!

Thanks for doing all the work for me man... was just about the post something like this when I saw this thread.

Bravo.

what an awesome game

Had Orange Box before someone stole my X-Box and it was in there - absolutely spectacular value for the money - especially with portal in there.

Ended up going w/Burnout - i did some research and the updates made me go for it - main one was the quick restart feature added - without it, i'd probably find it frustrating.

OMFG showtime mode? Hours of mindless fun.

morrowind or oblivion are good games to play for a hella long time

make sure you play them for a while before you look up cheats, cuz the cheats can get addicting

Just quickly saying that yes, the last Burnout was utterly, utterly unplayable. No restart point for a mission? Fuck that shit.

I'm depressed about these negative reviews I'm hearing. I still haven't played Paradise and I used to love Burnout...

BTW I spotted you and Joe at Bangface man! I would have said hello but.. I dunno, I guess I couldn't be bothered. Still, good to see you bro!

Haha, no worries man. I was in such a state for 90% of Bangface it's prob for the best! How do you think it compared to Bloc? I thought Bloc was maybe where the venue and music won out, but Bangface was where the rave was at... hard to pick a winner really!

To be honest, my weekend was a bit of a disaster. I loved it, but it paled in comparison to Bloc I think. Also my apartment had ants living in it, which is fucking gay!

Fucking can't wait for Glade. We've got the same festival schedule for this year eh?! Wonder if we'll end up camped next to each other again!

Yeah man, wasn't gonna bother with Glade, but new venue and all that looks good. I'm thinking Bangfest in August too after enjoying BF Weekend so much.. I promised myself only 2 festivals this year, it's all gone out the window!

Like the little cross-convo we got going on here - Obel-i-LAME I'm looking at YOU (and wishing your head suddenly explodes like in Scanners)

They actually fixed the restart in the game in an update - you can now restart whenever you want to (you can even quick-start once you fail a race).

I think that the numerous amount of patches that came out make this game a lot more fun than it probably was for people who got it when it came out - they added vehicle tweaks, day night cycle, bikes, and that all important restart. I'd probably murder someone if it wasn't for that.

Got Braid - still slogging my way through it as, Fred called it, very cerebral and sometimes frustrating.

By the way, did I mention that Obel holds the world record for number of cocks gobbled in one sitting? It's 72.
