Childhood Nightmares Visualized

Recommended Posts

for me personally the movie Primer brought to life most of my childhood nightmares (encountering clones of myself or loved ones) as well as the phone call scene from Lost highway.

This is pretty old, but I like them a lot.

I remember 2 returning nightmares from my childhood.

The mummy in some Tintin movie and comic book:

The other is Panoramix (or Getafix in English) from Asterix becoming a mad weirdo after getting hit by a rock. Really freaked me out as a child.

yeah man i had nightmares about the exact same tintin thing, fucked me right up lol...

also, dreaming about not being able to breath

and some thinly-veiled anti-communist allegorical book my gran picked up for me thinking it was a naive childrens book. the poorly developed metaphorical content was chilling to 6 year old me.

oh, yeah, the pictures are cool

3rded, that was the first things to shit me up. also walked in on some people watching the scene in aliens when the little girl is in the water - had quite a few dreams where i was wading through water being chased (ie. the whole slow thing).

thing that really shitted me up was reading a book of scottish ghost stories when i was 8 (meant for 'teenagers' but my reading level was THAT good yeah). aside from the obviously sketchy prose, it had lots of really good laminated full page illustrations. even after i finished it i used to look through the pictures out of morbid curiosity, it was my first experience of 'horror' aesthetic. the book felt like it had some kind of weird out-of-place life too. it had been bought for a sibling whilst i was still a baby and was quite tatty, always stuck at the back of the bookshelf.

the images that stick with me the most are of this rotting impish creature perched on a castle looking at you... it had a big face with a full head of matted hair... a wide mouth only slightly pointed teeth... quite human, but proportionately wrong. the main thing was that it had this expression of almost stupidity, sort of dull observation... like there was some intelligence behind the eyes but it was off with the fairies...

oh, and there was the pallid ghost woman... had the look of a mildly annoyed teacher... the story being that when alive she used to plunder highland battlefields, chopping off the ringed fingers of injured soldiers to put in her little wicker basket.

reoccurring childhood nightmare:

there's a large logging truck coming towards my location (as an observer only) there's faint screams like a girl crying for help but it turns out to be a goldfish in a small bowl doing this. the truck crashes and the logs fall all over the place and pretty much go towards the goldfish, but there's no sound from either the truck engine or the logs just goldfish

another interesting bit is that there's no background, the place i'm seeing all this is completely white (kinda like the scene in the matrix where neo is chillin with morpheus in a completely blank place)

this. reoccurring nightmare was the same white environment except with just a yellow bouncy castle surface going on for eternity in all directions. there'd be a deep guttural shouting all the time too. i figure it stems from being on a bouncy castle as a toddler - i was right at the back and then entire thing began deflating. all the other kids ran off but i froze as i began to sink downwards and the walls came to envelope me.

i also used to have these horrible recurring dreams of 2 or 3 recurring events where time was horrible and slow and suffocating, and these dreams always had a strong sense of dread and something would happen just as i woke up screaming...

im terrified im going to have a drug experience thats too close to this, it would freak me out big time.

i had a horrible waking nightmare when i was kid. it was a ghostly neon green dragon, outline style, as if it were a sign or something. and it wiggled and sined and drifted across all walls and ceiling at once. considering the people i grew up around i've often felt that maybe i was given some sort of hallucinogen or some drug that made me misintrepret some glow in the dark paint or a druggie's blacklit room

i dreamt my brother faked his death and was alive, telling the family it was something he had to do. fuck that was awesome.

probably one of the strangest dreams i've had as i believed it was real for a time.

my worst dreams have always been fever dreams. When I was little I had a horrible horrible fever dream and it occured in that white environment...one thing I always noticed in fever dreams is that there is a hissing silence, like the world is very tiny.

my worst dreams as a kid were always about tornadoes, for some reason. i'd have this recurring dream of being in a field and looking up and there's a tornado starting to come down right on top of me, so i'd run and hide in a ditch. most of the nightmares i've had are about scale, i think. things that are too large to comprehend or natural phenomena that is just really huge and imposing. i did have night terrors quite a bit as a teenager and those always involved people, or something resembling a person, and the threat was always a lot more personal.

when I was 3 (I know because we moved right after) I had a series of recurring nightmares wherein my parents and I were in this weird castle that was on a regular neighborhood street. sometimes there was a witch there. each dream was different but they always involved being attacked by furniture and shoes (being eaten by the couch, etc). sounds lame but I can still see it in my head and it was scary shit.

I think the original posters pics look a bit like child hood nightmares. Everything else looks like what IDM fanboys wish their nightmares looked like. They'd be free and you wouldn't have to downlaod them

this is going to sound a bit illogical.

as a child i had a recurring series of dreams where i was just in this white room, but just a terrible white room. i don't know how to describe it, like i was drugged or something and the whiteness was so terrible. it's a bit warm in the room. and my hands and arms aren't able to move and everything seems like my thoughts were clouded and unclear. some kind of material with a certain texture like the inner surface of something like this

http://media.rei.com/media/ss/4287bb60-e7e...c87585fc933.jpg

would rub against my stomach and arms very slowly, but i can't turn my head to see what it is. not because my head is restricted by anything, i just am unable... something about the room or someone or something in the room has control of my muscles and i can't do anything. then there is a needle... some dreams I could see it, some it was somewhere where I couldn't. I remember different dreams where it would inject into my cheeks, back of the neck, near my spleen, and one of thigh. The needle was always simultaneously extremely painful and yet dull, not like a needle at all. after quite a while of this i would wake up.

i've had a lot of bad dreams in my life, people cutting me open slowly, drowning and suffocating in all sorts of ways, watching people i know be murdered, but by far the dream above has terrified me far more for reasons i cannot grasp. to this day if i touch any texture like that sleeping bag stuff i get shivers and feel a little sick.
