X-box just died

God DAMMIT!!!!

Anyone have any experience with M$ repair speed? Since it's the E 74 error it looks like they'll fix this for free (badass) though I'm afeared it will take like 4 weeks (not badass at all).

I will say, they make the process pretty easy if you registered your console - I've got a box with shipping label on its way, got a UPS tracking number for it and looks like I just need to slap the console in the box and send it back. Here's hoping I won't be without media for too long.

That is a bastard. My Xbox has been threatening to chew up discs lately: It's already made my Bioshock unplayable and made a nasty incision into GTA4 which could eventually make it useless, and the drive itself makes very ominous noises. Thank god I took out a 3-year warranty with the shop where I bought it!

It won't take them 4 weeks. I received a new 360 seven days after I had sent them my Red Ring of Death infected console.

Daaaaamn - that's pretty ace. In a way it's kind of a blessing as mine's been chugging a lot in instances where it seems like it really shouldn't be having problems.

@ Ian - yeah, if I ever have to get another console (xbox 720 or whatever) I'm definitely springing for the extended plan. I know at Best Buy if you opt for it you can just bring in your damaged console, no questions asked, and grab another one straight off the shelf.

Those 3-year warranties are kind of worthless, because no matter what you will always have a 2 year warranty in case your product goes apeshit (of course I don't know if this goes for England as well) - much like the 360 tends to do. Plus, Microsoft is pretty cool when it comes to customer service.

I've only had RROD once. It only took a week before i got it back.

I'm on my 4th 360 now. The last episode was especially fun. I sent them my RROD 360 - 3-4 weeks later, I get a box in the mail, yay, a new 360, I plug it in, turn it on, put in a disc, instant RROD, I call them up bitch and moan, wait a couple days, get a new empty box, put the "new" xbox in and ship it back, wait a few more weeks... finally this new one seems to be ok, for now.

Yeah, you know, M$ gets tons of shit for failing 360's, RROD's and the such, but they've spent an ass-ton of money to cover these errors when they've discovered them. I mean, they could just be dicks about it and claim that it's user error but at least they've manned up to take responsibility for their errors.

20 gig. They gave me a free game as an apology for sending me a brand new broken one though - unfortunately it was projetc gotham racing...

My quickest turnaround for broken 360 was three days. Sent on Monday, received new one on Wednesday, couldn't believe it. That was before they moved their 360 repair places to some obscure European country.

Honestly though, it's fucking disgusting that we'd even have a discussion about how quick your 360 is returned. MS are lucky the 360's got the worthwhile games otherwise I'd be on the PS3 (which has nothing I want!). Remember the Mega Drive? I still play that thing. It still works! A year after 360 is done and replaced, everyones will be dead.

I hope this means MS have learned from the unreliability of this console when they make their next. They should because it's hit them in the pocket, the only thing that will make them listen essentially.

Heavy Rain looks really interesting though and it's the only game that could make me buy a PS3. But it's all because I'm such a big fan of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy

I didnt get a repaired 360 for about a month and a half but I called to see what was up and the indian lady must have made a mistake and sent me another one. So I got an extra 360(japanese region coded, plays world release games and of course anything you download on live) two days after the first one and gave it to my girlfriend at the time(big mistake haha thinking about trying to get it back to give to a friend for hella cheap)

i went through 3 xboxs inbetween january and march (fortunately i had a warranty) so i swapped for a ps3.

muuuuuch happier now.

Yeah, I hear you, but frankly they have so much money that given the choice between a)Pushing a Console out the door to beat the competition and b)spending more time to ensure you aren't spending millions in repairs but delaying a console release, they'll ALWAYS choose a over b. Shitty, I know, but I'm also totally impressed that they are actually retrospectively refunding money for people with the E74 error.

I'm sooooo torn with the PS3 - yes, I want Blu-ray, but fuck sony for trying to push their proprietary format. And fuck sony for putting Lik-Sang out of business. And FUCK sony for generally being really uncompromising in general. The Cell is cool and all that shit, but if you're not working with the Third Party developers when you build your system you deserve for them to want to work with a less complicated architecture. . . even if it's not as "powerful."

If you want Blu-Ray, Samsung make decent BD players (even better than the dedicated Sony ones). But, if you want a console too, PS3 is the only way to go. And to the "it has nothing I want" argument, a lot of titles are cross-platform now - so unless strangely everything you "want" is a 360 or some other console exclusive, I can't see how the PS3 wouldn't have anything you liked.

The reason Sony pushes formats like Blu-Ray (and gets hate for it) is because somebody has to - who's gonna advance technology? Whomever does gets a bad rap for a "proprietary" format (yes, Sony DOES have a bad past track record with MD, then ATRAC, and UMD), but Blu-Ray actually works, and works well to the point that it probably will make DVD obsolete, especially when data requirements for PCs and the like exceed 8.5GB on a regular basis... and Sony has good relationships with third parties... it's MS that tends to be heavy-handed (especially with their XBL approval process) with third-parties. Also, MS pays third parties quite a bit of money for timed exclusives, so besides the "easier to develop for" argument (that isn't much of one these days now that developers have had time to understand what Sony was trying to achieve with the Cell), there isn't much against Sony anymore like it was initially.

lol I think you and I will always be on opposite sides of the coin when it comes to the PS3 and V-snares. One of those givens of the Universe.

That being said, the reason I haven't gone for the Blu-ray is two-fold. One, I'm not convinced that physical media is the future of HD. Netflix on the 360 gets tons of use by me, and the HD stuff is flawless (even though I feel like its still in a "beta" stage). If they let you own the HD movies you paid for on the Xbox Marketplace, it'd be even harder for me to justify getting a Blu-ray player.

The second reason is that, yes, if I got a Blu-ray player, I'd totally get a PS3. Like you say, there's enough cross-platform games and there ARE some exclusives (especially the pixel junk stuff and games like Flower) that would make it worth it. Problem is, there's no way I'm shelling out that sort of money for another console.

Sony just rubs me the wrong way - maybe now that Kutaragi is gone things will be different, but their business decisions when it comes to the PS3 seem REALLY unfriendly towards the gamer. Like, how the fuck do you build your brand new next-gen console and not make it backwards compatible? I mean, there are probable 10 x's more games on the PS2 that I'd like to play than on the PS3, but you're telling me I'll have to get BOTH a PS3 and PS2 to play them? Come on, that's just a slap in the face. . . or maybe just really idiotic planning.

There's tons of these little things that make me just turned off to Sony - which sucks, because I really loved the PS2 and felt like they were on track in terms of keeping the gamer first and foremost in their minds.

I mean, I know it's a business, but at some point I really feel like there was some major disconnect between the users and the producers. . . tons of little things that it seems like they could have addressed if they had taken 5 minutes to put a poll up on any gaming forum and listen to the responses.

EDIT: re the argument that someone has to push a new format - it's not that Sony was pushing Blu-ray, it was that they were making it NECESSARY in the PS3. Whereas M$ said "hey, here's HD-DVD, use it if you want, but you don't HAVE to buy the add-on" Sony was all "Blu-Ray. You WILL have it and it WILL cost you an extra 100$. Deal with it if you want MGS4."

maybe the ps3 can get better buy fucking off there horrible controllers.. the 360 controllers are the unlimate in comfort and everything.
