ooh, there's a 3 track sampler of this album out and about.

if these tracks are anything to go by it sounds more along the lines of 60s>80s psychedelic stuffs as opposed to anything flaming lips. not too sure where i stand on it, but it's only 3 tracks of an all over the place double album, so i'mm still looking forward to it.!

yeah, i 100% take back what i said about mystics. really really really awesome album.

i'm currently obsessing over this band. their output is just too good.

Good man!

At War with the Mystics is one of those rare albums for me that just keeps getting better the more I hear it.

And 60's-80's psychadelic sounds like a good direction to me. I have faith it will be awesome.

Priest driven ambulance lacks Ronald Jones, from memory. He's what made early lips fucking classic.

jonathon donahue did that... ronald learned how to play guitar from listening to priest driven ambulance and hit to death

and the new album sounds more like a natural continuation of their last 3 albums than a return to 90s era lips

kind of like yoshimi with gimmicky old school garagey production

i suppose that continuity is only to be expected as they have always really been defined by their main songwriter (talented one) and for several albums now that has been steven drozd

Donahue went on with mercury rev, which was good until they turned to shit circa '97

Almost correct, except Mercury Rev were fucking brilliant until they turned to shit circa '97

and i don't understand the first bit of your post though... i already corrected your initial statement and explained how Dingus had already made early lips classic on priest driven and hit to death. Without dingus there would be no Ronald Jones involvement. Flaming Lips were better before he joined to be fair, as great a guitar player/human being as he was/is.

Have you seen the fearless freaks documentary, ugh... what an unbearable cunthole Jonathon Donahue turned out to be. Totally fucking tragic dicklicker... their later critically acclaimed (by the likes of Q and Mojo magazine) records are fucking awful.

Yeah man I'm not disagreeing with you at all, just saying it was a result of both of them. For the record, Hit to Death is my favourite lips album, but I don't think it's as "good" as Transmissions or Clouds (know what I mean?)

I haven't seen fearless freaks but what does he do that makes him seem like such an ass?

he's barely in it tbh, but when he is he just comes across like a totally pretentious "i'm a weirdy too cool for school druggy weirdo freak rock dude" like an Acid Bono perhaps? *shudders at the thought*

all the more wanky when compared with how cuddly and happy wayne coyne is.... i dunno... he's just a dick..

also ... nobody seems to rate At war with the mystics, but I think it's a much better record than yoshimi which seems to be universally loved

and on these matters, my opinion is as good as concrete fact. essentially it's tautological.. my opinion IS fact . they are they same thing

isn't deserter's songs, which came out in 98, their best record? i've never heard any of them but that seems to be the consensus.

see above ... most critically acclaimed (by the likes of Q and Mojo).... make of that what you will

1991 yerself is steam is chaotic psychadelic guitar noise plus flutes and a fat peedo on vocals ... somewhere between butthole surfers, sonic youth, mbv and miles davis (very sleepy rivers) perhaps (but tbetter than all of those)

1993 boces continues in similar vein but with more brass and experimentation and bubblegum pop. sprawling epic pieces remain (better than most records in the universe with the exception of yerself is steam)

these 2 ^^ both feature original frontman dave baker

1995 see you on the other side (minus dave baker) ... moving into almost marvin gaye whats goin on area at times... guitar explosions less evident, beautiful sophisticated music wandering into pre war jazz and blues at times... everlasting arm just amazing song...

1998 deserters songs ... great album.. lots of bowed saws and early cinematic motifs... couple of duff tracks... less longevity than earlier records

everything later... ugh gay

IMO etc

same goes for flaming lips.... yoshimi is probably their most succesful / acclaimed record but 90-95 era was their best era in my book 90-92 to be precise

Edited by LUDD

agreed... one of my favourite records of all time

my rev records are among the 1st things i would rescue in a fire

translucent blue vinyl ftw
