i think hipster is an american thing... you get the same sort of 'fashionista' twatlings over here but it's either just teenagers or shoreditch types who make up the brunt of the wanky creative industries and art universities (so theyre kind of excused). everyone has a giggle at their expense, and thats it.

what im wondering though, do people fear wearing anything 'quirky' or weird for fear of being labelled a hipster? or is that just it? caring about people percieving you as individual/cool vs. caring about people thinking you're a pretentious wankstain?

americans just make everything preposterous and overblown and annoying. and thats on both sides of this hipster/anti-hipster thing.

tis true, being put back out "on the market" made me wise up more than a bit about my sense of style and the need to clean up a bit.

 

i think you're spot on about the 2nd point... for the longest time i was wearing clothing which was much much too big on me (i'm 5'6", about 135 lbs) and i realized that i looked rather silly and just threw everything out (donated). finding clothes that actually fit, which DO tend to be skinnier cause i'm a skinny dude, feels a whole helluva lot better as far as comfort and i think they look a whole helluva lot more appropriate.

 

and i'm sure there would be a great number of people who haven't seen me in a few years who, at first glance nowadays, would probably side with the hipster label for moi but that doesn't really matter.

Yeah, I think the clothing you like reflects your taste and that in turn represents your personality for a part.

equating weird and quirky clothing with hipter fashion is extremely inaccurate. Once a specific look has been established and there are specifc templates (see urban outfitters catalog) have been formed they are no longer weird or quirky. It takes a distinct effort to dress like a hipster just throwing on weird clothing isn't going to make you look like one. The hipster fashion look has become imo just as specific of an aesthetic as gothic/industrial fashion

example: giant circular Jackie Onassis sunglasses, weird or quirky? no and practically every hipster girl has multiple pairs.

I've never seen an Urban Outfitters catalogue, but I've seen the staff - and they certainly look like hipster clichés. UO carry some good brands though, and they offer a student discount, which is why I return - Cheap Monday jeans, APC stuff, and they've even started carrying traditional stuff like Fred Perry and Original Penguin lately. Going to UO is always a guilty pleasure though, you really know you shouldn't. The ones in London have started carrying a really limited selection of crap "vintage" stuff lately - £40 for some schoolboy's polyester cricket jumper? Yeah right.

good quality clothing does not necessarily cost a lot of money, you just have to know where to look. a lot of people shudder at buying stuff from thrift stores, etc, but i dont know where they get the $ to put together a proper wardrobe without doing at least a little thrift shopping. orrrrr maybe they're all in debt.... yeah.

i thrift and more often than not the most expensive thing i wear is on my feet but i used to live somewhere where it snowed and my jacket was definitely my big ticket christmas present/ something not to be scrimped on

i'm not a patriot by any means but your america bashing idrn is quite annoying and lame.

what i was saying is its pretty american for hipster to become some massive clique/label with everyone crying about it, starting blogs, making videos, writing articles etc etc etc. you actually have an anti-hipster movement, whilst we just had a tv show produced by charlie brooker.

To be fair to Idiron, London is full of hipsters and no-one seems to care beyond an amused indifference. I think that may have been one of the reasons why the satire in Nathan Barley fell a bit flat for me - who really cares what a bunch of tossers in Shoreditch are doing?

we don't like hipsters here because they can fit in skinny jeans and are probably having sex way more than us.
