I don't understand how anteaters evolved. It's like hey, let's subsist off of something smaller and less common than grass. Same thing with baleen whales and krill, except baleen seems a lot more efficient than having a straw attached to your face.

How legal/plausible would it be for me to have one as a pet way up here in Canada? I am willing to take the necessary steps immediately

i've been doing research for a few days. in the us it varies by state but most of the time it looks like you just need an exotic animals permit. you'll probably want a tamandua which are the smaller anteaters that you see standing upright in pictures. the giant anteaters are, well, giant and much harder to take care of and i think their claws can be bad news. they are the ones with the cool grey stripe. there's also a tiny anteater monkey-looking thing called a silky anteater. but yeah if you're like me you're probably going to want a tamandua. it takes a while to get them-- up to six months. some conservationists will tell you that it's wrong to domesticate an anteater but my approach is decidedly interpersonal with the anteater itself. i know i would give it all the love an attention to give it a happy fulfilling anteater life. besides in south america these anteaters are killed as pests-- though you may be encouraging the exotic animal trade by obtaining one, on the other hand you might be saving an anteater's life by taking one in. their diets are difficult to replicate domestically so you'll have to be prepared to make weird ant and beef oatmeal and shit like that. it's probably better to have two of them as well. they cost around 4k USD a piece. they require a lot of love and attention too. but they are cool as shit (obviously).

i have no idea-- probably insignificant compared to the cost of the anteater.

another issue is if you can get the anteater to consistently shit in the same spot... havent found any info on that yet

i'm thinking about volunteering at the denver zoo and maybe eventually getting in close with the anteater at the zoo. that might mean mopping up bird shit for a year though so i dont know.

I bet they have super long tongues. Do you think you could train him to eat ants that have been inserted far up your ass?

Do you think you could train him to put the ants up your ass first? I can't think of any reasonable way to insert them so far up your ass that you would actually utilize the entire length of the tongue

nice!!! man i fucking love how they cruise on their mom's back like that.

i've been trying to convince my wife that we should get one but she says they look like something from star wars and for whatever reason she doesnt like that.

I think a thread about anteaters should be at least 3 pages. I still can't stop thinking about them.

if you can get anteaters than you can probably get sloths. not that i don't want an anteater but i love sloths. plus it''s not like locking them in your house is a bad thing, they wouldn't be able to reach the front door and escape before you got back and caught em. i'll take an anteater though. he can be buddies with my sloth and we can all watch hockey and drink beer.
