Oz!

About a Maximum Security Prison

HBO's first show of its kind I think. Has shitloads of recogniseable actors in it from all over the globe. Shitloads of deaths and brutal murders.

I just finished watching through every episode and am gonna try the Wire again next as I didnt like it before but everyone bums it. Oz is brilliant though, just tails a bit in season 6

i bought a david simon: homicide a year on the killing streets book today.. ment to be a lush read

just finished the wire. fantastic. couldn't have wished for a better ending. how can anybody not like the final season? it's the best one!

i guess the sopranos just got beaten in my book.

so, what's the consensus on the next best series? i mean among the die-hard wire fans?

sopranos is absolute genius at work

i would use the word masterpiece when describing it

and the 6th season is fantastic, mainly if you've watched the first five leading up to it

it's mindblowing, really. i lost it all the way through the 6th season.

if you've never taken the dive, you are lucky. you've got days of entertainment ahead of you

I've been slowing moving through the various star trek series/seasons and have been enjoying them still watching tng but gonna move on soon.

I watched the pilot through episode 3 i think of Twin Peaks and am really enjoying it...I really love the way it is shot and random little details...I deff recommend it

Lost wasn't mentioned but its a pretty fun show

anyone who says arrested development isn't funny either watches tv while they sleep or have only seen 2-3 episodes..every second of the show is practically an inside joke so if you don't really know whats going on it will just seem odd

edit: curb your enthusiasm is also good, kinda like sienfeld on awkward steroids

few shows that I've really enjoyed other than the Wire:

Band of Brothers. i've watched this 10 times. my favorite show of its kind.

Generation Kill. not nearly as good as BofB but still interesting and a worthwhile watch. writing is not very good, but overall plot development is good.

Arrested Development. very intelligent and very hilarious. this show need multiple viewings to get all the jokes because just about EVERY line is a rim shot. perfect writing, perfect pacing. literally maybe the best show ever made.

The Office. both versions... the UK version is very funny, but also sad and depressing. The US version is just hilarious... very easy to watch over and over without laughing less. once in a while there's a dull show and you think the writers might have lost their touch, but then the show makes a hilarious comeback.

Summer Heights High. Australian comedy. basically stolen Christopher Guest (best in show, waiting for guffman, a mighty wind, etc) style laughs, but laughs all the same.

Larry Sanders Show. Takes a while to get into... not always funny but most characters are great and the show will grow on you.

Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David. Larry David. Larry David. the dude wrote seinfeld. he's hilarious. early seasons feature some of the best secondary acting.

dude you nailed that shit! i love all of those shows immensely but i've never seen 'band of brothers'

Larry Sanders show is imo probably the most influential modern television show for both British and American TV. the Office and Curb your enthusiasum would not exsist had it not been for the ground work laid by Larry Sanders.

Its also probably my favorite television show of all time. the dynamic between Larry and Hank is fucking awesome, its like a back and forth codependent married couple.

here is a clip -

this part is mostly showing the fake late night talk show aspect of it, its about 1/4th this and most of the actual show is behind the scenes Office esque

the show the Comeback on HBO also seemed to fall through the cracks , nobody ever talks about it but i thought it was a pretty awesome comedy show in the vein of Curb, but its more awkward and less funny. it takes the whole awkward uncomfortable moment thing to the utter extreme.

plus they hang out with homeless people

i saw this video and had to post it on watmm:

Some that weren't mentioned (a lot) so far, all are seriously recommended:

Carnivale (slow paced but epic none the less)

Extras (brilliant Ricky Gervais at work (comedy))

Firefly (sci-fi, pure genius)

Green Wing (funniest show ever, this will get you laughing guaranteed)

Rome

Survivors

Invader Zim (a cartoon, but still brilliant)

Also, Trailer Park Boys sucks, skip that

almost done with twin peaks. 3 more episodes, then "fire walk with me". even though the show jumped the shark way too fucking early, I love it. Fucking. Love. It. Audrey Horne is a fucking goddess.

Band of Brothers is really incredible.... something that you won't forget... nothing is out of place, the acting is great----the only weird thing is the dude from friends in it at the start which might get you thinking you're not going to enjoy it. but keep going.

the show is nearly perfect.

as for the larry sanders show.... hank and Artie are amazing.

I'll check out that other one you mentioned.

i'm definitely going to check out Homicide: Life on the Street and also Generation Kill. after wire, i'm pretty much confident i can't go wrong with a simon david show.

let's not talk about star trek and lost and heroes and such in this thread, okay?

also, seeing how i'm more or less the only person on this board that doesn't appreciate arrested development (but instead think it's a cheap, trying very hard to be witty, show), i have decided not to partake in (provoke) any conflicts about it. i am sorry for all the bad feelings you may have had because of my bashing on the arrested development. i hate it, you love it. that's perfectly fine.

i'm quite hesitant about band of brothers, as i have never been a fan of war/military thematic. but, if it's a good show - i'm sure it focuses more on human relationships than on battling enemies, which should be enough for me to be able to appreciate it.

do we have anyone that's watched the shield? i had it recommended a few times now, but i'm not really sure...

yeah band of brothers is probally the best film/series about war ever put to film. it beats Saving private ryan ten fold. even though its nearly the same style.. it just dosnt have tom 'im in a war but too relaxed' hanks acting it it, but has him producing along with spielberg.

the only thing which comes close to this is das boot (the tv series)

generation kill i think is really good to watch after the wire, it has ziggy in a role in GK, who is rather good, its like the wire but in iraq rather then in maryland

Oh dear.

Just watched the last episode of season six of Curb Your Enthusiasm - the final 2 minutes nearly killed me, absolute magic!

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."
