Seoul. Tokyo. Shanghai.

They all destroy Vancouver or London for numbers of convenience stores.

Let's say you're at a park in vancouver. You've run out of water, oh no, wtf are we going to do? In Seoul, there are guaranteed at least two convenience stores within a 2 minute walk. In Vancouver, you're SOL.

My last house in Seoul had 5 convenience stores within a 5 minute walk.

this is true. It doesn't make these infinite apartment block hells any less hellish though. Seriously, China and Korea have taken apartment complexes to some other level of reality. Someone needs to shoot a surreal TV show a la Twin Peaks or The Kingdom in one of these places. I was just in one last night, the place was as close to having no soul as any residential district I can imagine - apartment complexes stretching to infinity, each having it's own little "Family Mart" or "Buddies" or "Lawsons" - convenient, sure, but stupefyingly creepy. It's the same as tract housing in the US burbs, taken to logical suicide.

you are right on fucking point there.....

when I was in Seoul my girl took me to see this one district, it was nothing, absolutely nothing but 40 story apartment buildings as far as you could see, all with their own distinctive logo on the side to delineate each one..i always wondered what it would be like to live in one of those things....if it would fuck with your mind....

the weirdest part was it was surrounded by an artificially built nature preserve.....so it was like an alien hive mind disguised by forest and lakes.....creepiest-slash-awesomest thing ive ever seen.

40 story apartment buildings? that's a LOT of trust in your neighbors. one apartment fire and a large percentage could die. my friend's apartment burned to the ground on his wedding day because his neighbor left the stove on. and that was only a 4 apartment building

Most of the apartments that Smetty saw were probably around 20 storeys. I'm pretty sure the area he's talking about is Mapo in western seoul. You can kind of get an idea of what he's talking about here:

I kind of want to live in one. The new ones are pimped out, and you get that dope internet connection.

I've got a whole street of shops 30 seconds from my house.

They range from the useful:

convenience store, newsagent, green grocer, sandwich shop, and the all-important chinese takeaway

to the completely pointless (for me anyway):

horse-riding accessories shop, kid's barbers, and a shop that seems to sell wool and paperclips.

across the street, 5 of them (6 actually, but i never go to that one). they used to be 24/7, but the boys in the hood used to stay up late every night and get well drunk etc. also, 2 petrol stations (my place is right between them). it's all around romania and i guess eastern europe as well.

There is my local shop. Next to it is a derelict storefront. Then a café, then a brothel. It pretty much repeats that formula for a few miles. They try and open any other type of establishment and it goes the way of the derelict storefront.

Dude you anywhere near Southgate? I spend a lot of time in Southgate.

that might have been it...i dont remember the larger buildings in the backdrop...it also seemed to be more spaced out..but i was on the ground level,

is Mapo in the Western part of Seoul? I think thats where we were..

yes smetty..if you read the post...lol western seoul.

So basically it's just Canada and the States where shit is far away.

7 shops, 5 of them are off-licences, A fish and chip shop, chinese take-away, 5 pubs, all within less than 5 minutes walk. Most of them 1-3 minutes away. Oh and 3 parks and a post office, and a tanning salon, hairdressers, estate agents, and 3 schools. There's also a 24 hour garage, and a couple more shops/off-licences, mini-malls, and pubs. I am being fucking literal here, this is all 5 minutes from me max, 2 churches, 3 restaurants, A Jaguar garage, some sandwhich bars and a Chinese supermarket (this is all outside of the town centre btw before any of you ask).

Oh and two valeting services.

i have a choice of 3 off licenses, 12 pubs, a 24 hour garage, and 3 newsagents within ten minutes brisk walking time.
