MJ and RDJ

Yes RDJ was influenced by Micheal and he would tell you as much I'm sure. Michael had some rather IDM elements--you can't tell me that dancing in front of an argon laser in a disco ball suit while a Popcorn-esque Moog lead tinkled in the background isn't proto-IDM. The biggest selling album in the world begins with propulsive electro beat knocked out by a TR-505 or TR-707 or summat--something that would not sound out of place on an Analord record 22 years later.

Windowlicker video is clearly the biggest send-up of pop music cliches that Richard and Chris could come up with. So, you get the extended dance scenes like "Thriller" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Chris Cunningham even incorporated latex special effects like Rick Baker did. Basically, in terms of sales, popularity, and similarity, Windowlicker was RDJ's Thriller

i had some similar thoughts myself when viewing the thriller video and reading about how michael started the 'short film' music video trend with that song. before that video music videos mostly consisted of just bands/artists peforming in a set or live. it made me think of Windowlicker 'cause there's a connection there, without thriller would there be a windowlicker?

i've been thinking recently the whole Aphex/Chris Cunningham period was obviously an attempt to create a hyper-celebrity along the likes of Michael Jackson. it was almost as if it aped his plastic surgery stints, going from Come to Daddy, to the dancing Windowlicker, to the pale white subterreanean recluse of Rubber Johnny.
