I think the poster is trying to insinuate that socialism is "crazy" and dangerous, by portraying obama as a socialist looking like the joker who was "crazy" and dangerous... Just my take on it - reminds me of a television show I saw once, someone was discussing the "cover story" graphic of a magazine, showing a goldfish in a fishbowl with too much food; depicting the economy, and that the goldfish will eat too much and explode... the reply of which was "why not just put a picture of a bomb with the fuse lit and a dollar sign on it?".

Americans use the word "liberal" to mean anything outside the Republican Party, whereas a great deal of what is outside of that party is socialist (correct, non-hysterical, meaning intended!) and therefore the opposite of liberal.

"Liberal" means emphasising the rights of individuals over lumping them into groups, which in most Western countries is associated with the New Right movement...

But yeah, as someone else said, the Democrats basically correspond to the centre Right in most Western democracies. Few Western countries have a mainstream party that regularly wins elections that is as far to the Right as the US Republican party.

it's not really wrong since the term liberal has kindof always been the "opposite" to conservative, and republicans represent that sector right?

but in recent times liberal (neo-liberal), began to apply to those whose ideolgy supported monetarism as opposed to keynesian economic models models, ie less govt. spending, less regulation etc. and strangely it's usually the conservatives that stand behind this ideology. but it goes both ways. a liberal can be one who thinks the goverment should stay away form people's wallet, and also someone who thinks the goverment should stay away form people's zippers.

So what is the ism in Europe? It doesn't seem to be a true socialism. Its kind of like america except maybe a little more taxes and better social programs. Im sure it varies from place to place, but there is no shortage of wealth there.

europe could probably be considered democratic socialism. one difference from the states and most of europe is the parliamentary system as well. america looks awfully close to a plutocracy, where rich lobby groups blatantly buys legislators and these groups also control the media that makes sure to hammer home that their agenda is what the people really want.
