marf
there will always be taxes. Just like there will always be poor people, no mater how much tough love you give them. Its the difference between deciding if you want your taxes to go to wars and the military industrial complex. Or do you want your taxes to go to things to help the community and the less better off. Republicans tax the shit out of us as much as anyone else. Guest analogue wings
It's not a question of degrees and relativity - it's a question of the word actually being used to mean its opposite. Americans use the word "liberal" to mean anything outside the Republican Party, whereas a great deal of what is outside of that party is socialist (correct, non-hysterical, meaning intended!) and therefore the opposite of liberal. "Liberal" means emphasising the rights of individuals over lumping them into groups, which in most Western countries is associated with the New Right movement... But yeah, as someone else said, the Democrats basically correspond to the centre Right in most Western democracies. Few Western countries have a mainstream party that regularly wins elections that is as far to the Right as the US Republican party. azatoth
considering how backwards and retarded the americans and their political system is, it's no surprise they get their terms confused. actually the blame is probably on the "news" entertainment networks. they are probably the main reason the political discourse in america is so damn stupid. lets boil down complex issues to short talking points, severing all ties to reality, that can be repeated ad nauseum. they will then be repeated in the echochambers around the countries media outlets until they have become "facts" which in turn are the building blocks to other retarded talking points. God that is so true, except these messages are crafted by special interest groups and or lobbyists. The big problem is money buys politicians. lobbyists are the real issue. marf
So what is the ism in Europe? It doesn't seem to be a true socialism. azatoth
someone posted it on irc. might be from something awful. not sure. europe could probably be considered democratic socialism. one difference from the states and most of europe is the parliamentary system as well. america looks awfully close to a plutocracy, where rich lobby groups blatantly buys legislators and these groups also control the media that makes sure to hammer home that their agenda is what the people really want.
