Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is better than Surfing on Sine Waves

surfing on sine waves sounds dated and cheesy in some places. saw is a timeless classic. i know many people that listen to no electronic music whatsoever and still love selected ambient works. and yeah, i wouldnt even put SOSW at the top of the artificial intelligence series either. i like bytes and incunabula more.

APHEX TWENZ BEST WORK IS PIGEON STREET

bytes maybe, but incunabula cannot in any way be better...

I think it is easily is though.

That said, those Surfing on Sine Waves tracks are from like 1990. Read that somewhere and I'm gonna believe it.

Selected Ambient 85/92 is classic, probably some of Aphex's best work.

classic yes, best work? lol.

considering how popular it is in comparison to this other albums, I would say the music on SAW8592 is truly special, and although technically not close to as impressive as say Hangable Auto Bulb or Drukqs... it's melodies are very powerful and speak to a specific time and place very easily. To me that is some pretty great music, I would say some of his best.

How prophetic! Actually, this thread has survived while the other died... yeah it's a matter of opinion but SAW is just classic. SOSW is too, but in a lesser way.

I would say everything he has done after SAW8592 is kind of an extension of that album, like this was his foundation album, and every album after was building on top of it... keeping the same feelings but creating them in new ways. It has some of his most pure and cherished songs I think.

Well I'm not sure about that, but reading your post I got a great vision of what this album must have seemed like when it came out. From the first few notes of Xtal to the present day, the chronology of aphex releases is an epic musical journey, and SAW is really what signaled the arrival of this prolific and innovative artist. I wonder what people thought at the time - when I first heard SAW a few years ago, my mind was blown. I felt like I had heard all these tunes before, they all were very familiar. That is the mark of a true classic.

Off-topic note here: when I was in the bookstore I saw a thick tome entitled something like 1000 Must-Have Albums. SAW was RDJ's only album in it. Aphex was mentioned in the liner notes, (The specific words said were "[blah blah] Aphex Twin's sonic trouble-making [blah blah dont really remember]")

actually, i too get what you mean by that. and earlier when it was mentioned that SAW8592 might be some of his best work, why can't it be? because it isn't as complex as later releases like hangable autobulb? i think you could be right
