We met a couple of young lads who were considering to be a prime example of the Icelandic youth: out to get themselves smashed as much as possible. They convinced me try snus in a new way, which involved getting a medical needle/cannula which had it's top sawed off, stuffing it with snus to get it as compressed and tight as possible, put the needle to your upper lip and 'inject' it so it stays in a sausage-like shape underneath your upper lip. Just leave it there for some time and it'll give you constant nicotine rushes for as long as you have it up there.

I stood there for minutes on the same spot talking to this guy and wondering when it would take effect. I moved one step and I swear the world came tumbling down on me. I felt so bad even though it was just nicotine. Holy bejesus it was gross. And the taste of raw tobacco in my mouth for hours, no thanks.

Can't be added to go into detail but I did two weeks driving round Iceland a few years back and it remains the best holiday I've ever had. The country is beautiful and as a Londoner the isolation was an amazing tonic. On a practical note, if you can afford it then a 4x4 is the way to go. Having said that, we did the whole journey in a VW Polo. There were times when I thought we wouldn't make it though!

similar. Went there in 2003 or so? Was there for 2 weeks, rented a car and did a circuit of the entire periphery of the island. My favorite trip so far. Gorgeous, otherworldly scenery. Some of the roads are truly hair-raising. One bit of advice would be that I found the Lake Myvatyn (spelling?) area towards the north of the country to be a bit underwhelming. It's a big tourist destination apparently, but I think skippable if you have to. Everything else was stunning.
