Guest Sprigg
Hmm... thanks for the advice, man, I'll try it out... and what exactly is a stutter cut? How do I get a sound to stop if I only want it for say, a couple of seconds, for one segment of the song? I have tried a couple of sytrus sounds and the pre-loaded 3xOSC 'bell' sound, but the last note from the pattern always hangs out for the rest of the song... how do I get rid of this? I can't seem to do it. From my limited memory of FL, I do remember the step sequencer doesn't send note-off messages. If you want to control the length of notes, then use the piano roll. The step sequencer should be used for simple drums loops and synth sounds which fully decay to zero, otherwise you will get the hung notes you describe. This is true, you can right click on your step sequence and select send to piano roll and it should alleviate your problem Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Hautlle's signature Hide all signatures Albums/EPs Free to DL or stream Newest stuff is on Soundcloud Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/48106-im-a-newb/page/2/#findComment-1103739 Share on other sites
Guest Sprigg
Rock on, the piano roll did the trick! Thanks guys, a lot simpler than making a zero-velocity note right after it (which also, in some instances, seemed to require I place said note perfectly in order to cancel out the prior note) Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/48106-im-a-newb/page/2/#findComment-1104107 Share on other sites

Guest epsy
I started out the same way it seems other posters here have as well. By using a bunch of loops and dicking around in a sequencer like SF acid. Gave me an idea of how things work without overwhelming myself. Once I got the swing of things, I started wanting a bit more control over what I was doing. I started trying to make my own loops for the drums and melodies. Then once that made sense I started learning about engineering and mastering. Something that I still learn more and more about everyday it seems. But like I said...the best thing to do is DON'T overwhelm yourself right out the gate. Experiment. Realize Rome wasn't built in a day and have fun with things as much as possible. It also helps to have a couple mentors who really know their shit too. Especially when you hit a wall creatively with certain things. Guest iamabe
Learning FL Studio felt like the most exciting time in my electronic music education. The joys of step sequencing. I think the melodies I wrote with a mouse in FL's piano roll were more awesome than anything I come up with on real keys. that said... FL is a good host, but after a while I lost patience with the tiny-ass plugins it ships with. Sure, 3xOSC is useful, but it hurts my eyes. My advice is to open fruity loops even when you have no inspiration and tinker. Even when I was totally bored I came up with fun stuff in fl studio after a few minutes. If you dont feel like making music, do some light manual reading.
