Canon 7D

i thought 5Dmk2 was pretty good in terms of reducing the "jello" (rolling shutter vertical skew) effect. i mean, it's still there, but then again, what CMOS sensor doesn't have a rolling shutter? i guess they could improve it some more with even more channels for readout, and looks like they really did in 7D (4ch->8ch).

btw nikons are just horrible in terms of the skew effect.

i've had the 5DII for a few months now, and have shot a music video among other things with it, and it's phenomenal. i'm debating selling my entire HVX/Redrock setup and just investing in accessories and upgrades for my 5D rig.

the 7D, however, does bring the 24p thing to the table. as much as folks claim that 30p is the 'way of the future', to *my* eyes, 24p will always just have that special 'look' to it.

on the 5D forums out there, there is rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth debate and conjecture about the status of a 5D firmware upgrade that will provide 24p. the 720 / 60p stuff would be nice, but i'm not counting on that. the 7D has 2 DIGIC4 processors vs. the 5D's 1... that probably accounts for the 60p ability - i wouldn't be surprised to hear that a single DIGIC4 can't handle that.

but 24p (and 29.97 wrapping proper) should be completely possible. so i'm hoping it's just a matter of time.

i'll probably pick up a 7D at some point as a B camera and for the 'overcrank'-ish 60p framerate.

the crop sensor isn't so bad... i used the 20d, 30d, and 40d for years before finally upgrading. EF-S lenses are, IMHO, a waste of time, but my L-series lenses will work fine on the APS-C, just have to account for the focal length shift.

7D is definitely cool stuff. as far as it being "too much" for a newbie - i would rent one if possible. it's not that it's too much, but there's definitely more to it than with a point-and-shoot (for stills or video). there's enough automatic functionality to hold your hand until you learn the ins and outs of aperture, shutter, ISO, etc... so perhaps just go for it.

i love this stuff.
