Its on to the break of dawn!

I'm tentatively revising this week's schedule so that Peel Sessions pairs up with EP7 instead of Cichlisuite.

It was released in 1999 so it fits better. At this point we're only at the '95 era

Anvil Vapre is great. It's the current tiled background to my YouTube page.

I particularly like Second Bad Vibel and Second Scout.

As for Tri-Repetae, I like Eutow, as cliché as that is. I also really like C/Pach, it reminds me of Cipater for some reason, subconsciously.

I just can't get into Tri-Repetae. Sorry. I've listened to it a lot lately, but I keep finding it dull and sterile compared to a lot of their other works.

I haven't always been too fond of Tri Rep but I will give the album a few lengthy listens this week to make a conclusion.

On the other hand, Anvil Vapre has always been a favourite EP of mine from Sean and Rob. It seems that the main focal point of the Anvil Vapre tracks is the use of layering everything together, whilst having a central point to the track which is the constant looping of the melodic theme. It's effective and they pull it off well, e.g. Second Peng has such a great looping theme to it that I don't find myself getting bored throughout the length of the track as it's such an interesting track. Some artists can't pull this off. If you have a looped melody in let's say a 6 min+ track, then you have to be sure it's an interesting and dynamic melody that you are repeating otherwise the listener would just get bored.. To me, Anvil Vapre always makes for a satisfying listening session.

Tri rep is one that you all must listen to carefully because there are some awesome tracks here. Also I'm thinking we should actually add Peel Sessions EP to this week because I forgot it was recorded in '95. If a mod could edit that, it would be sweet. Also I tried to put the album covers for Tri Rep and Anvil Vapre in the OP but all it says is posted image now...

Anyways on to the album, here's my preliminary breakdown:

Dael: Awesome intro track, great bass... possibly meanders a bit too long though.

Clipper: Also a brilliant track. Great mood and atmosphere

Leterel: Honestly one of the few Ae tracks I have trouble enjoying

Rotar: This track is a brilliantly emotional dreamy track. Wait until the pads come in and this track catches fire!

Stud: Really awesome flow and atmosphere. Very droney and repedetive but the way melody flows around is masterful

Eutow: Another awesome track, can't really say what makes this one great though

C/Pach: Always been one of my favs. The melody is chopped up so that you never hear the entire thing in one measure so its like piecing together a puzzle

Gnit: One of the greatest tracks on the album. Again its all about the dreamy pads and atmosphere they create.

Overand: Another epic ambient track. Its good enough to go head-to-head with Bronchusevernrmx

Rsdio: Brilliant dubsteppy track. Really slow build, but great rhythm and sounds. If you don't like this one you definitely have not listened to it enough times.

Thats all for now, I'll do Anvil Vapre after.

I don't think things are going to work between us, man....

You're not the man I married.

I'll try and explain it a little so you might be able to understand it. I find alot of Ae tracks have core elements and distractory elements. It almost seems like they want you to work hard to find the actual beauty in some of the tracks.

In this track, I'm thinking that you focus too much on the snare/hi-hat type of percussion. Listen more to the thumping bass drum. The synth that comes in at the beginning that only plays that one note over and over is also sort of a distractory element. By about 2:20 in, the core element of the flowing pad synth begins to surface. Pay close attention to that pad because I feel that it is the core of the track. It very very slowly becomes more predominant until it peaks just after 6:00 in so it might help to listen to the track around 6:00 to get a feel for what you're really looking for and then do the whole track again. Hopefully that helps.

Rotar is a great track, makes me think of an large engine that grew legs and is walking around or something like that

Guest Calx Sherbet

Eutow is really odd, but has plenty of depth.

i hate how whenever i do this with headphones, i always gotta turn the volume up a little more with each song (probably because my eardrums are swelling up). otherwise it's too quiet. then i hit the volume limit and i wanna go higher. then i get done with the album and everything seems way too quiet

i'm in love with this album, probably for a long list of reasons not all of which are related to the actual sound of it all. i found the general track philosophy to be different on this album. to me, each track feels like climbing a long hill, being heavily based on adding and subtracting layers. i think it becomes masterful in the subtle ways in which the beat is shaped before finally closing out. i also think the sounds they created on this album were some of their most beautiful (eutow certainly comes to mind, as does dael). i have to give it another listen so i can come up with my individual track reviews, but after hearing this album hundreds of times i still love the bugger. i definitely see why people would find it less entertaining than LP5/Untitled era ae, because it's much less insane and hypersequenced. its beauty is that of a more refined beast, rather than the raw tracks they let fly later in their career. expect more cheesy metaphors in the near future.

It seems like so far in our experiment, this is the first album that we're starting to have a lot of disagreements about which tracks are good/bad.

Just to list a few, my favs on this album:

Rotar, Stud, Gnit, Rsdio

Rotar and Rsdio are my faves too. Eutow is not too far behind.

I used to absolutely adore Leterel but it wore off on me. Also I wish Stud wasn't ruined by the jangly screeching twice every single bar.

Everything else is really good.

This album doesn't exactly jump out at me either, but if I haven't heard it in a while it still sounds fresh. I kind of like that it's a bit boring - makes it good for driving around or writing, coding, etc.

They seem to be using effects in less obvious ways. There's still reverb, chorus, delay all over the place but there's more layers. Also the effects are starting to become essential components of the individual sounds (the midrange "cough" of Clipper, the "snap" of Stud, flange/chorus/short delay almost every rhythm sound in Gnit, the comb filter drone of Rsdio) or the structure of the rhythms and melodies (strobing delayed tones on C/Pach and Overand). Also in Eutow and Stud in particular are some interesting uses of pitch bend or portamento on Eutow and C/Pach.

The subtle arhythmic changes against the rigid rhythms also become more prominent: filtering of percussion throughout Clipper, the introductions to Clipper and Rotar, mixing and effect changes throughout the album. This is probably most prominent on Rsdio, where nearly every component undergoes subtle changes in filtering or effects throughout the track.

I get that too. It seems like there's more dub influence maybe? Certainly so on Anvil Vapre.
