Tri Repetae / Anvil Vapre

Recommended Posts

Though I am not a huge listener of this particular album, I set aside some time this week to listen to it all, as well as randomly picking out certain tracks here and there.

Stand outs for me are: Clipper, Eutow, C.Pach and Gnit

Even after this week has gone, I have doubts that I will return to it very often. Perhaps every other month, but this specific album of theirs doesn't offer a lot to me unlike their other releases. I'd go as far as saying that Amber and Incunabula are far more enjoyable than Tri Rep.

I'll go ahead and mention the other albums that are 'technically' considered part of this weeks rotation:

Peel Sessions:

Milk Dx is one of the craziest ae beats. The way it shuffles around, at first seemingly chaotic but quickly reaches some form of order. The vocal samples in it just work so perfectly with the beat, the whole song kind of sounds like a dancing ghost or something. I can't get over this track and it blows me away pretty much every time I hear it.

Inhake 2 is alright... starts out kinda crappy but progresses into a fairly steady beat. Not really one of my favs but the way the melody starts to mix together and flow around towards the end is really cool

Drane is a brilliant ambient piece. I can't really even figure out what is happening to the chords here that give it such texture and mystery but this is another brilliant track to say the least.

We R are why is a bit of a back-track for ae, although its a really good track (and ep) I can't help but feel some sort of BoC influence here. The bass in the first track here is great, nice and deep and the pads really slowly peel back to reveal the true colours of this track over a good 11 minutes. Somewhat repedetive of a track but never gets boring.

Are Y are we is much better than the first one even. It begins with a somewhat creepy cold sounding Autechre type of deal. After playing around with the track for a bit, they reach the 4:10 mark and right after that the track becomes really beautiful and melodic. Almost like earlier BoC or Aphex Twin. If you have not heard either of these stunning pieces of music, do so as soon as possible.

Anvil Vapre

Second Bad Vilbel is one of the first and only true thrashy type of Ae tracks. It quickly gets into a really harsh and heavy beat and doesn't really let up. At first it focuses on making all of the percussive components come together before the beat falls away again while the creepy dark bassline comes in, and then the track hits you with full force again. Towards the end when the track is slowed down it gets so much heavier. This is probably the closest they have come to metal music. Such an angry sounding track but I love it!

Second Scepe is a highly rated Ae track as far as I can remember, and it is totally justified as such. The beat instantly hooks you in, and the bassline comes in fairly quickly to establish the track. I love how the higher synth melody comes in a while after mimicking the bassline so it sounds like two synths arguing or singing together or whatever. Great track.

Second Scout brings it back into the light for this album. The previous tracks are pretty dark but this one is very upbeat, happy and hopeful sounding. Quite a repedetive track but the filtered pads going on here more than keep my interest the whole time. There are also a good chunk of subtle percussion deviations throughout the track. Also the occasional noise in the background (about once every 1.5 bars or so) is packed full of reverb which gives the track a huge amount of perceptable depth. This element almost characterises the track without you even noticing but when you listen for it you can identify what the sounds are really doing here.

Second peng, oh man. Brilliant closer for the EP. Sooooo heavy, I would challange that it's the heaviest sounding track they have done to date, simply because the kick drum here is so fucking deep and chock full of reverb. Sounds like the most incredibly hard pounding you can imagine. Also we got the classic Ae ticker going in the background, and the melodic components to this track perfectly compliment the whole deal. Can't decide what my favourite part of this track is.

there it is folks, hope it wasnt tl;dr for most of you

this is normal rotation intervals for me, with any album

ditto...

Perhaps our definitions of "every other month" are different.

Whoa, I guess I was just in time to listen to Anvil Vapre and Peel Session 1 before Chiastic Slide week. I really got to appreciate Second Scepe and Second Scout, and Milk DX and Inhake 2 are awesome.

But really, I just came here to say this:

DRANE IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AMAZING BEYOND BELIEF

Yeah! We've all grown so much!

I don't mean to be a grumpy fucker... but I don't understand how a discussion of albums = describing the tracks. I mean, surely describing the tunes is completely redundant seeing as we can hear the tunes. I could understand if this weekly thing was "Describing Autechre for the deaf", which by the way would be much more awesome!

Maybe I was hoping for gayer discussion? For example, here's a story related to Tri Repetae:

I first heard Autechre on the Chris Cunningham DVD, I quite liked Second Bad Vilbel (not realising it was heavily edited) and thought I'd splash out 8 quid or whatever it was on Tri Rep++. I did this because I didn't want to pay whatever it was for a four track EP of just Anvil Vapre and I heard a 30 second sample of Clipper that I just fell in love with. So I got it, was underwhelmed at the cover art of course and whacked in the disc. Keeping in mind I was only really into Aphex at that point, I found this a bit different. Slow, highly repetitive and boring as.

Anyway, I skipped Dael after getting bored and listened to Clipper, which I've always regarded as the quintessential IDM tune, ie industrial influence, pretty solid beat and nice melody (that to me is kinda what IDM is anyway). I adored Clipper straight away, loved the way it built up, everything seemed to fit. But every other fucking track on Tri Rep was so boring! Just repeat a beat or sound or whatever, layer more sounds, builds up, falls apart in the closing minute or two. That was how I heard the album. So, disappointed I was. I put Clipper on repeat and listened to it approximately 73,000 times and put Tri Rep to one side.

A little while later I was listening to media player with all tracks on random and Garbagemx36 started playing (I'd never even bothered with Garbage at this point), I think I was just browsing at the time or playing Solitaire or something, but I didn't pay any attention to the track length (which probably helped, because I might have just dismissed it at the time with its 14 minute runtime). So anyway, the track went on and at the first crescendo with the strings I thought "Wow! That was a great tune" - which then ran on for another 6 minutes more. I was pretty amazed that a tune could be so repetitive but so compelling because I'm naturally pretty averse to repetition. It was that moment that AE clicked with me, I gave Garbagemx36 another listen on headphones in the dark, lying down to go to bed, four foot dick in hand and then I spoo and then I came to the conclusion that this was indeed "The Shit". The next tune that played was Gnit (I didn't realise I had the player on random still and assumed it was the track after Garbagemx36) - then I realised I decided to give Tri Rep another go. I still wasn't taken, but I did love Rotar and Eutow.

Then I bought Untilted... [TBC]

Actually, that story was far too gay. You're right to just describe the tunes, carry on doing that.

To clarify, I love Tri Rep these days but it was certainly a grower. One thing I think is interesting is that most people seem to find the older albums more immediate than the later stuff, but I found that the later albums were instant classics for me. It's the older ones that have grown over time, usually because I return to them for a couple of tracks and then I realise there are more I like. Dael is a good exmaple of this. Don't think it's anywhere near my top AE tracks, but it's nowhere near the bottom either.
