26 Mixes for Cash

Recommended Posts

Great album. I initially liked it for the beat-wankery of the Spotlight remix (it's still a great track), but there's so much better stuff on the album. The acid lines on that Flow Coma mix, the entirety of the Raising the Titanic mix, the bass on the Flowers mix, and Heroes is fucking beautiful. Your Voice My Head is great and At the Heart of it All is one of my favorite tracks from Richard.

Top three for me:

Journey - seriously how has no one mentioned this - seriously those intertwining melodies get stuck in my head for hours after I listen to it. If only the sound quality was better

You Can't Hide Your Love - That weird echoed part for like the 4th verse that is so lovely

Mindstream - this is like rich's take on Mad Bomber esp with that really similar floaty pad melody

i love this album, but in my opinion cd2 is waay better than cd1. it's much more creative, much more afxy.

fav tracks:

1. Falling Free (really feels like falling free, is giving me deep chills)

2. At The Heart Of It All (great track when in bad mood)

3. Can't Hide Your Love (it's SO cheesy :3)

4. Krieger (The ending has one of the most fascinating rhythms to offer i know)

5. Spotlight (great percussive working)

oh, seems to be all cd2.

This is one of the best compilations ever. One of my absolute favorites from aphex. It took me a long time to appreciate Krieger and Heroes (I got this when I was 13/14, when it was released), but it's a all killer/no filler compilation, which is pretty much the only compilation for me that has that status.

There is one thing I still don't get... WHY WASN'T THE POLYGON WINDOW REMIX OF SOFT BALLET INCLUDED?!

When I first downloaded the CD in 2003, I got that track between Raising The Titanic and Journey by accident, those first few tracks were one big trip. Then I bought the CD and I was really dissapointed, at first. They should've let the We Have Arrived Mix out of there and replaced it with that Soft Ballet remix.

i understand your problems in getting into krieger when you were 13, but why would you leave out "we have arrived"? it's such a great abrasive track, listening to it on headphones right now (thank you :emb: ). it's like the long version of "AFX 6 B" from bubblebaths3 i always wanted.

Nah, I have nothing against We Have Arrived, both remixes and the original are totally mental and are just classics, but they're really easy to find. I have them on the original Mescalinum United 12", both mixes were also on the Classics compilation already, which I own on cassette, CD and vinyl. The Soft Ballet remix is pretty rare compared to that, never seen it for sale. Even on discogs the Soft Ballet CD is for sale for 50 bucks.

I also think the We Have Arrived doesn't really fit the atmosphere on 26 mixes (even being a compilation of random tracks), and especially compared to the Soft Ballet remix. I am a little prejudiced though, because I had the Soft Ballet track on 26 mixes the first time I heard the compilation. And it's just one of the best afx tracks ever. :music:

The only track I can't take on repeat is that Philip Glass Heroes remix.

Somewhere on a busted a hard drive is a mash-up I made of that and an UNKLE instrumental. I was fucking around with a crappy DJ mixing program and the breakbeats lined-up perfectly when I slowed it down. Needless to say, it sounded cool and now I feel like that remix is an odd acappella track.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

Aww, no love for Zeros and Ones? That seemed to help pave the way to glitchy, spaced out, desolate sounding albums like RH-8SB and The End of Tel Aviv, and certainly Aphex Twin's next album, Selected Ambient Works Volume II.

i have a special love for debase - in fact that and Luke Vibert's mix and the whole Mike Flowers ep reminds me of the fantastic year of 1996 - poncing about elephant and castle in my mate's Astra on a regular pie n mash mission (along with mike n rich, plug, gary moscheles and Ae peel session tapes)

this track would've fitted right in with disc 1. i guess 27 mixes for cash just doesn't have the same ring to it?

top tracks for me are

Raising The Titanic (Big Drum Mix)

You Can't Hide Your Love (Hidden Love Mix)

but i love nearly all of them. shame about the sketchy sources for some of the songs. oh well. btw quex-rd and sand lowe (the polygon window remix) are fuckin' incredible. i get completely lost in quex-rd and have trouble believing it exists, esp. after hearing the original.
