Too strange, I heard about this on talk radio this morning. So weird to hear "some guy named Ulrich Schnauss" uttered on the local rock station. I wonder how his music would even enter Axl's world in the first place. Buckethead maybe? I hope not, I love me some Buckethead!

Blabbermouth has the videos for both Schnauss tracks mentioned in the lawsuit (we’ve reposted them below), and after a few listens, it sounds like Domino and Independiente are going to have their work cut out for them in proving their case. Whereas there was a clear, though unintentional, melodic similarity between Joe Satriani’s “If I Could Fly” and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” the Schnauss lawsuit focuses on 45 seconds of ambient soundscapes at the beginning of “Riad N’ the Bedouins,” before the song breaks into full guitar assault that shares no resemblance to Schnauss’ body of work.

 

We’re not legal experts, but unless there is some sort of documentation proving that Rose and company stole the tracks — like proof they tried to clear the sample and failed — it’s hard to imagine the million dollar fee would be awarded, as it seems like countless artists such as Boards of Canada, M83 and Fennesz could have easily filed a similar suit. Plus, half the stuff on Chinese Democracy has existed for the better part of the last decade, while the two Schnauss songs came out in 2001 and 2003, so it’d be practically impossible to determine who predated who. Rolling Stone reached out to Gn’R for

comment, but hadn’t heard back at press time.

after listening to everything multiple times, the first 45 seconds of Guns'N'Roses - Riad N' The Bedouins are a definite sample of Ulrich Schnauss's two songs. Probably what happened was that whoever mixed it needed some ambient stuff for the beginning part, decided to sample some Ulrich Schnauss together, and didn't think anyone would notice or care. Whether Axl Rose was actually behind it or 'okayed' it is debatable. Is it worth a million dollars though? It would be cool if he won

While the band resents the implication that they would ever use another artist’s work improperly and are assessing possible counterclaims, they are confident this situation will be satisfactorily resolved.”

ahahah this is hilarious. even BETTER is that Domino is asking the court to halt all sales of Chinese Democracy. 17 years to release the album and axl rose made the most stupidest mistake ever by not clearing the samples. and now it has to be pulled from stores.

Axl put in so much money in Chinese Democracy and he didn't want to shell out the cash for clearing the samples which is an even bigger lol.

christ, whoever's responsible for sampling this must be a giant fucking talentless (and lazy) hack. making something similar to the parts sampled wouldn't have taken more than an hour.
