well if it really is a partial derivitive of a fourier transform that would make a lot of sense, since that is related to the function used to produce the visual output that reveals the hidden image from the song.

Yeah, I agree with the Yahoo post, looks very much like Fourier. I had to write up a report about using Fourier analysis to reproduce human vocal formants. The whole "F ext" thing shouts frequency to me.
