Overand
Two cents worth on Peel2. This album, played at maximum volume, is way better than I remember it. Gelk is one of the most "human" Autechre tracks I can think of, especially given the gradually slowing steel drum percussion. Blifil, had a pretty great beat and probably overstays it's welcome but I'm not complaining, especially once the severity ramps up and the electronic sighs come out to play. This, for whatever, reason seems exemplary of high end IDM. The hilariously named "Gaekwad" (I still say "geekwad") - has the same childlike steel drum/xylophone percussion elements as Gelk but a more twisted approach to the rest of the track's instrumentation. It sounds like a wind up toy soldier dying in a blaze of glory. 19 Headaches doesn't do much for me. Dale
I'm surprised to see that this thread so far has the least amount of replies. I rate this release highly among ae's work. To me, the abstraction is what attracts me to it. I feel I need to be in a mood which allows me to concentrate in order for me to get the most out of EP7. There's just so many details and textures involved, and whenever I come back to it, there always seems to be a new detail I stumble upon which I had not taken into account earlier. I certainly would not say it is accessible for new ae listeners, it's definitely a grower though. I look for emotive qualities in music I listen to, so when I come to ask myself if EP7 has these qualities, I say yes.. to a certain extent. Dropp for example, has an excellent emotive melody rippling through the complicated beats.. I think the overall consensus is that Dropp is one of the stand out tracks on this record. It does seem immediately accessible and easy to enjoy upon listening to that melody going through the track. Outpt is an immense tune.. one which I would describe as being full of strength. It doesn't make any notable turns or directions, it remains constant - but I wouldn't want it to change in any other way because it really does stand very well as it is. Pir is such a refreshing yet surprising end to this record. Someone described this track as an "underwater" type of track, I can see the association immediately with that swishing beat. A beautiful track nonetheless. I have to admit that this one took a while to grow on me but I gave it time. Squeller has on of the best endings to a chaotic ae track. Admittedly, Rpeg doesn't do too much for me, I like the beginning but it just seems to drift off for a little while during the middle-to-end area of the tune, and quickly loses my interest. When looking at ae's music I try and appreciate tracks the way they are instead of trying to project my opinions on what they could have done better.. I mean what is the point in doing that? They're not going to listen to your so-called improvements are they? So you might as well just enjoy the tracks on EP7 for what they are, no matter how abstract they come across as. They still provide steady structures.. the tracks all progress in some way with a lot of energy, they hardly stay the same for 3+ minutes. This release is one of my favourites from Sean and Rob. Stand out tracks: (this is difficult because I really enjoy almost every single track, and obviously track choices fluctuate and change depending on many factors! - as we all know) - Outpt, Dropp, Maphive 6.1 and Pir Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/49896-ep7-peel-sessions-ep-2/page/2/#findComment-1151590 Share on other sites

Dragon
Done listening to Peel Session 2. Somehow, I get the idea that this is how a lot of their unreleased material sounds like. It's not their best work, nothing like Draft 7.30 or Envane, or even Peel Session 1. Although Gaekwad is reasonably good, I'm not surprised that giving EP7 and PS2 their own week resulted it a pretty stale discussion without much going on. Luckily, it doesn't matter much because in two days things start to get awesome with the dawn of CONFIELD week! I'm gonna listen to it all at least twice... thehauntingsoul
I still want to emphasize how much I think this album sounds like Ae underwater. Confield tomorrow!!!(yeah we go sunday-sunday) Gelk is an awesome track that has a really great transition and eventually becomes dauntingly dark and horrible. It kind of sounds like this track is the soundtrack to love gone wrong. You can notice it beginning to turn after you look back retrospectively, but at the time everything still seems peachy. Great ending, pretty good track overall Blifil is a great ae beat fuckery track. I love how its ridiculously detailed and at first it seems really repedetive but they mix that beat up like you wouldn't believe Gaekwad is alright... it feels like it doesn't have alot of momentum though. I love the laughing samples towards the end, and actually the second half of the track is alright 19 Headaches..... the only redeeming quality for this track for me is the melody. It sounds really random at first but listen to it carefully and it fits into a really cool melody with all the other noises going on. Besides that I skip this track almost every time.
