There was already a thread about the remastered version:

Well, the problem with SAW 85-92 in the first place is the master recording was muddy, and so they tried to "remaster" this and all the low-end stuff loses it's punch, and as a result sounds tinny. I'll try to do some comparison rips of both versions (LOL, I just looked, and I've got 5 different versions of SAW 85-92) to illustrate, or someone who's got the time could do it as well...

please do...all I can say is, that my remasterd Version does sound a LOT better than the 192kb rips.

Having listened to it several times through, it still sounds hell of a lot better than the CD I burned before owning a copy...

Since its difficult to get the original recording in a decent quality(the Cd versions I've seen are >60€) you should give the remastered version a try. At least its way better than the version I had before.

Check out discogs marketplace, and a new world awaits you.

OT: I've never fully listened the remaster, and I don't have plans doing so. I really dislike remasters (and their purpose) like this in practically any genre, it (almost) never works out.

ive had the original cd for years. i got the remastered version on vinyl about a year ago. id say that it does sound noticeably clearer. it's worth hearing on vinyl, so remastered is the best, most affordable way to go for that.

That's the problem with remasters. I don't want them to sound clearer, I'm afraid (yes, I'm overreacting) it takes away the unique production (or lack thereof, which has its -very important- charm) and will turn it into an overall more accepted sound with no deviations anymore.

But in the case of this album, I think I'm just too attached to the sound of the old version, and I'm afraid i can't listen to the old version anymore without thinking of the edits (just don't touch the classics).

lol you're right. 7€ is way cheaper than the remastered one.

I've had the original for years, always thought it sounded poor. I downloaded the remaster recently expecting a big improvement but it still sounded like an old tape. I think there was some improvement, but not what I was expecting.

the tape hiss is an integral part of that album.

this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield

indeed. remember that thread where some douche suggested that we all get together and re-create saw85-92 so it'd "sound less shitty"? that was a serious zole.

Fucking lol

This is just so R&S can make more money, right?

I have half a mind to buy the remaster just because it's in one of those snazzy SUPAR_JEWL cases but that would be stupid.

yeah i was tempted too. but then i saw the vinyl on ebay and thought AW FUCK YEAAAAH, or something. i want classics too now!

Referring to the CD remaster, the only difference I could really discern was boosted volume, hence some of the louder tracks have probably lost some dynamic range through compression. It's an odd album to remaster since the tape warbles and various imprefections are so integral to it's sound (which R & S must have agreed with since these were left in). This is a very weak remastering job in my opinion and if I were you I'd save my money, particularily if you already have the original pressing.

The same goes for the Classics remaster; these are lazy reissues for cash.
