buzz build 1147

Recommended Posts

very very stable. i never thought i'd say that about buzz. the new piano roll/sine wave synths are super. and lovely small touches all over the place.

Guest Hanratty

quote from Buzz website:

"Unlike other audio packages which require a super-computer to power a single synth, Buzz has been programmed for speed. It is not at all uncommon to employ 10 completely seperate polyphonic synthesizers, 5 samplers, 2 drum machines, 3 mixers, and 10 DSP effects all simultaniously. Thats on a decent machine. A fast machine could easily triple that. The more complex machines you are using the more CPU power Buzz requires."

Is that really true? How is it that their program can do so much more with fewer resources than other programs?

It kind of says it right in the quote...

So many other companies don't focus on that. A lot of Buzz's code is probably in a lower level language. It's really nice because it gives me more options... my laptop is very slow.

Time to attempt some braindance music. :fear:

It sure is,

Check out the setup from one of our tracks from a few years ago - it's approaching probably 50 machines and there isn't any sound drop out at all (and my laptop is over 4 years old too).

I love my Buzz !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

i'm loving these new buzz builds (so much so that i've been getting back into making electronic music as a result). haven't got the latest one yet but the one i have is stable as FUCK. except for 'mdk pimpom' errors every now and then, though i'm not sure what that means really. doesn't seem to affect the sound, though i do manage to save just after it happens, just in case.

also i think part of the reason why buzz is so fast is that there's none of the over the top graphical shit that you find in 90% of other music programs.

ooh, so this is the one that was rebuilt from scratch after the original source code was lost?

not really rebuilt from scratch. It uses source code that was quite a few months behind what the latest version was when the crash happened. Oskari just decided to revive it.

im trying to mess around with buzz, but cant seem to figure out the intstruments. i have like 4 bass synths and some other bullshit, but where's the meat? no samplers, no drum machines, no envelopes. I cant find any "instrument packs" to download and dont have a fraction of the machines that are shown/used in the help file so i cant follow the tutorials.

wtf?

the thing with buzz is that it's entirely modular - if you want more machines you need to download them. try the big packs at buzzmachines.com for a good start. as for samplers, there are quite a lot in buzz, my favourite is matilde tracker because it's pretty much a clone of the DOS trackers from the 90s.

and regarding 'instrument packs', i don't think there are any really, besides the drum machine/synth machines that are sample based. the whole point of buzz (imo) is to be creative with it and not use sounds that other people have created.

here's my 'essential list' of machines (ones that i use in pretty much every song):

FSM infector - 2 oscillator (+sub) synth that is quite diverse

matilde tracker

ninja delay - capable of dub delay style sounds

larsha funkyverb - possibly the best reverb in buzz

jeskola EQ-7

ld transient - good for really interesting dynamics processing, can add a lot of punch to your drum sounds

fuzzpilz fudrum3 (or whatever the latest version is) - great drum synth

FSM chorus

joachims saturn - all-round lofi plugin, detune, degrader, tube distortion, etc.

ryg's analog distortion

kibibu green milk - another great synth, also very diverse but has a few minor sound related bugs

there are other really excellent machines, and some rather unique/wacky ones, just try them out for yourself.

thanks for that list. def gonna check those out. by instrument packs i pretty much meant collections of buzz machines. I couldnt find any packs of machines on buzzmachines, just the individual instruments, is there a specific place for them?

ld grain (generator/effect) is nice, though you need to spend some time with it to learn how to use it well. you can get some nice sounds with fsm tunaman (effect) too.

peer machines are extremely useful: btdsys peer lfo, btdsys peeradsr, btdsys peerctrl, btdsys peerenv, etc. in a few words, these machines allow you to control/automate other machines' parameters. the results depend on which peer machine you choose; for example, you can modulate the wave parameter (saw, square, etc.) in a synth with peer lfo.

Anyone know the status of VST compatibility? PolacVST was pretty solid before, I'm curious how well its doing in the new build.

Just for you new Buzz folks I've uploaded my entire Generator and Effects folder:

It expands to nearly 400mb so you've a lot to play with. So that this doesn't kill the bandwidth of the cubus site, please do not share this link outside of here. I'll keep the link active until the end of the year.
