I think a misconception many posters are taking for granted is that the people are deriving pleasure from the pain of fish or that the aim is to "torture" the fish. This is definitely not the case.

What's really ridiculous is how people can try and say something is absolutely wrong. You can be absolutely offended but this does not make anything inherently wrong. Cultural norms are prescribed by external factors, by parents, school, media ect. and they're so thoroughly internalized that it seems like these values are innate when they're not. What is innate for people is empathy and the drive for self-preservation. Empathy facilitates social contracts between people which in turn aids self-preservation. When self-preservation is not imminently threatened, generally, people tend to expand their range of things with which they can empathize because the drive is still there. People are probably disturbed by the video because they can imagine the same treatment being applied to themselves or to a beloved animal, they empathize with the fish. I'm not calling everyone a Bourgeois pansy, I'm just saying that morality is flexible even though everyone has morals. In any case, I doubt there are "tons" of people in China that find this video equally offensive.

Anyway, I realize you're probably just being facetious with that question, but I'll answer anyway since it still relates to my point. I find frying a fish far worse than swatting a fly due to how much more needless pain the fish suffers. With the baby/fish comparison I was trying to point out how flawed and dangerous it is to use a creature's ability to rationalize or not as the criteria for whether it's okay to make it needlessly endure vast amounts of pain. Fish can't rationalize, babies can't rationalize: let's not justify these things based on that.

And I realize the rest of your post is responding generally to a bunch of people who aren't necessarily me. But in any case, since I got nothing better to do (other than sleep)...

I never say anything's "absolutely wrong" because I don't really believe in any absolutes, and at the very least I think they're useless to bring up in a serious debate. I guess in a sense you could say I am a moral relativist, but I'm one who has a very strong personal code of ethics which is obviously going to differ from a lot of other peoples'. I can back mine up with reasons why I think things are good or bad, terrible, beautiful, all that shit. My basic outlook is that living things being free from pain is a positive thing, and so anything that needlessly inflicts pain is negative. Because of this, the most disturbing quality in a living thing to me is the desire to be cruel. It seems to be something that is perhaps unique to humans. When most animals play with their prey it seems to come from an instinctual place rather than a conscious "I want to make this thing suffer and get pleasure from it" place. Instinct rather than rationale. So any human practice where cruelty is a significant motivator is completely sickening to me --I can't watch this video or any other like it without feeling physically sick. (not in an "ugh I'm grossed out" way but in a "holy shit I don't even want to be a part of this species" way.) Lastly, I'm sure there are tons of people in China who are disgusted by this sort of thing due to how heavily populated it is, but I'm sure they are in a small minority. And they are probably within the same small minority as the people I'd get along with really well in my own culture. They'd be people who are both genuinely kindhearted and able to think for themselves without blindly going along with any and all customs their culture may have. I'm not saying that anyone who tries this sort of thing is neither of those things (they may even be both and doing something very out of character), but it seems like the people in China who would be strongly opposed to this sort of thing would share those qualities.

Sorry if I sound like an asshole. I know I do! It's pretty damn near impossible to communicate with a group of people without sounding like an asshole to at least a few of them. I just felt like not shutting up for a bit. I'm going to try to sleep now.
