hamburger helper

Recommended Posts

is there an easier, better tasting comfort food in the winter? this shit is for breakfast at my house. well, lunch and dinner really. tuesday night hamburger helper whilst watching the new V is now an institution in my household I'm happy to say. which means wednesday lunches are hamburger helper for me as well. which is what i'm eating right now. i keep the temp at 64 here so this was a much needed belly warmer, it feels like a balmy 68 now. cheeseburger macaroni flavor is my favorite right now but i'm thinking about exploring other flavors like maybe three cheese or beef and pasta. so much to choose from.

Thanks Fred I know now from your last few threads exactly why 60% of all Americans are overweight. Don't get me wrong the food looks great (apart from the sick on breadcrumbs), and it's clearly fucking tasty. But Jesus wept man, fucking hell.

fucking hell what, it's hambruger and pasta, have you ever had hamburger and pasta before, faggot?

i used to dig the shit out of this, mostly because we ate it irregularly as a family meal so it was a "treat". i haven't made it in years, i guess what i'd say about it at this point is it's good but filled with all sorts of artificial flavorings and salt which i don't have the same taste for as i used to. i mean, shit, make a proper bolognese and you're multiplying the flavor factor here by 5x at LEAST.

but who am i fucking kidding, set a bowl down in front of me and i'd gnosh like no other. good thing i don't keep any in the house...

There's nothing wrong with Hamburger Helper. My mother used to make it like once a month when I was a kid and I enjoyed it thoroughly. And like most things how "unhealthy" it was depended on how much it was seasoned or what garnish you put on it.

no argument about the bolognese but we're talking mind-bendingly different prep timescales here. it takes me 0 seconds to make hamburger helper because my wife can cook this one. hell, a monkey could cook this on the second try.

but yes i love all things salty. maybe i should grate a pile of parm on top of it next time.

despite seeing the word 'pasta', 'macaroni' and 'just add hamburger' i have no idea what this actually is

it's hamburger cooked in a pan then you throw noodles, water, and prepackaged sauce powder in and cover it and let it stew for about 15 mins.

go ahead though turn your nose up at it because it's the IDM thing to do. be sure to put a cocorosie record on while you do so.

i bet joyrex will have my back on this one.

Prior to my culinary evolution this was a staple in my home. I don't buy it very often now though because I can buy the sauce mix in numerous flavors from the bulk bins and just keep a jar of the stuff handy when the mood strikes. The stuff is versatile though. Mix some in with scrambled eggs and roll it up in a tortilla and bang, you have a breakfast burrito that is hard to rival.

Hamburger Helper is good in a pinch, but you can make your own, more healthy version just as easy and quickly:

1 lb. lean ground beef

1 pkg. Lawrys spaghetti sauce seasoning (substitute with bottled sauce if you don't want to go the dried route)

1 lb. elbow macaroni

1 lg. can crushed tomatoes

2 tbsp. Schilling Italian seasoning

1 tbsp. dried parsley

Salt & pepper to taste

1 tsp. garlic salt

1 lg. can mushrooms

1 med. size can chopped green chilies, mild

1/2 c. Velveeta cheese

Simmer crushed tomatoes with spaghetti sauce seasoning, parsley, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper and garlic.

Brown and drain beef, add to sauce.

Add mushrooms.

Add drained macaroni, chilies and cheese.

Simmer until cheese is melted. Mix well and serve hot with salad and French bread.

i am satisfied with the amount of praise hamburger helper is now getting in this thread.

Have you tried the Beef Stroganoff flavour? It's even better if you add your own sour cream to the mix (just a spoonful to give it that 'tang')

We usually keep a box of the Salisbury flavour in the pantry for quick emergencies...

*waits for the English WATMMers to start lamenting about one of "their" places being used in the name of an American product...
