there's something very disquieting about these pics

what were these made with? look fucking amazing

custom code.

i have an ultrafractal formula for the thing, but it's not half as good

Amazing. But I agree they're more than a little unsettling.

Edit: I don't know why, but I find this monster image downright scary.

SIGH

i knew some fucking smartass would bring that up

it was 'discovered' in the same way as gravity or vanilla z(n+1)=z(n)^2+c mandelbrot or wave/particle duality.

it was always there, but we just found out about it

tech edit: it's not a true mandelbrot, really. because mandelbrots work in the complex plane with i,j mappings, there is no true topological transformation to three dimensions, only four. which is called a quaternion. a strict mandelbrot set (the black area, not the coloured bit) is only a 2-d mapping of the connectedness or lack thereof of the corresponding julia sets on the complex plane, this can also be mapped to 4d, but is of course impossible to visualise completely.

discovered is a perfectly legitimate term to use in this case.

If Kaini had said "invented", that would have been incorrect.

amazing. Recalls me a cool thing that happened to me lately. Well, i likely suffer from a hallucinogen persisting perception disorder, which makes me constantly see a kind of "visual snow"(i see dots everywhere). Sometimes one of those dot widen and turns into a more juliaesque shape. A few weeks ago one of those turned into the mandelbrot set (the whole set, that's why i recognized it).

Makes me think i've recently had a lucid dream, a long lasting dream. At one point i looked down at my watch, an imaginary watch that i don't actually wear, and i was like "wow this is amazing the brain can render such a high level of details". I like the idea that the world as we perceive is based on hyper-elaborated fractal processes made by the brain. The fact that your visual cortex has a lesser activity when you're seeing fractals patterns (e.g. whilst on drugs) seem to go along with this idea. :sorcerer:

3D mandelbrot is still mega cool.

one day I need to read something that will explain what these are

excellent introduction for a casually interested person. there is maths involved, but it eases you in

and holy fuck they have the whole book

nice picture book, pickover is a god when it comes to fractals

also, just download this

and have a play around with it. srsly

i made this recently (not with fraqtive)

I didn't mean to be a smartass, I was just wondering how that works.. I guess the wording threw me off but in retrospect it's perfectly fine.

I don't like the term HPPD. I strongly disagree that it is a disorder. I think it's just that once your mind realizes how fluid everything is, then you see the truth behind matter. I have the same deal and I'm really torn between whether Psychs are simply madness and wackiness or if there is some underlying framework of reality that they expose you to.

i like this one i made a while back

it reminds me of xenomorphs

Well i don't know if it really is a disease. To me what's partially wrong in HPPD is the H. I remember i have always seen these dots although the use of hallucigenic drugs such as cannabis and LSA surely increased the thing a little. Concerning the relation between these hallucinoses and reality, i've only spotted the dots tend to follow a Brownian-like way of moving, wich is fractal-related because it is auto-similar. My soundToCoulouredShapes synaesthesia also leaks through my visual snow, and i'm actually able to (slightly) see sounds into the TV snow. I've been told that the mechanisms underlying such phenomenons (i mean seeing things among chaos) is comparable to the fact of seeing figures into clouds. I strongly recommend you to try watching the TV snow for a while and just relax. Then do it again when you're on some hallucinogens (psychedelics works better). You'll see things more easily. For both ways, the brain just find paths through the succession of purely chaotic pictures, but the use of drugs tend to make this process easier. I think this fact is directly related to the fact people on acid tend to have a more analogy-based, paranoid and metaphoric speech because drugs soften the rules underlying associations of ideas. Same goes with the tv snow.

But you're asking if the chaotic look of the visual snow has some roots into the reality that you suppose to be regular. I'm not sure if it is the good way of asking the question because what is reality without the brain perceiving it if not chaos...

Also you descrbied your snow as "the truth behind matter". To me it looks like it is over it, or more accurately it is printed on the film, just as snow appears on pictures and movies shot with a low lighting.

I recall reading that Mandelbrot wasn't even the first to discover 2-d fractal patterns, he just took the credit for it because apparently he was a self-aggrandizing cunt.
