This is mostly true in the United States. The market is completely saturated as there are a million schools offering graphic design degrees, so people get them pretty easy then are out in the work force clogging up the field and driving down the wages.

I guess I was in the same boat you're in, but guess what - I decided to finish up. Now I spend all my time in the office working on 3D games. I'm still unmarried, but at least I get a decent paycheck.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

- lost cloud

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

-organized confused project

learn something handy like plumbing or wiring or something in construction. they pay good (eh, fairly good), are always in demand and have flexible hours (by appointment!).

Short-term, manual labour always seems like a solid idea, but then you've got to think about if you want to be doing manual labour at 50+ years of age and the possibility that health-wise, you might not be able to do your job anymore.

Have you thought about Graphic Design? I have no idea how education or even the working climate works in America but I have a bunch of Graphic designer friends who've just finished uni, had a great time studying it and still lived a pretty happy student type life. They have all gotten work pretty quickly one of them has even started his own busniess in furniture.

Graphic Design is a flooded market, where only the truly gifted and talented and/or those with excellent sales/marketing skills will make any real money - it's very hard to make a decent wage unless you've found some niche studio to work for (a prerequisite being your're really, really good), or some boring corporate department (steady and sometimes very good pay, but no real job security if the company decides it's cheaper going contract), or doing freelance, which has it's own ups and downs.

Im at a cross roads in my life. I have to basically start over. I don't have the time to go back to school for 4 years, Im too old. Older than Id like to admit. My only option I can think of is taking a computer training course for 6 months and getting certified in all that microsoft IT stuff. A friend of mine recommended a school. He makes good money after doing the same thing. God I sound like a Lincoln tech commercial. I could of course study on my own but I'm shit at doing that stuff by myself. Job and education decisions are purely a practical decision at this point.

that's awesome! I always considered games. I had fun making levels in unreal tournament for a few yearas. I feel like it appeals to me because it's entertainment so it's somewhat less stressful than making real buildings that can fall killing hundreds of babies and mothers. then again... game developers are always under pressure from publishers and lots of devs close after one or two games because they lose so much money.

Move to England and I'll teach you how to tune cars. Before you do that though, I want you study in depth American muscle engines. Don't ask me which ones, you want the job just do it, all of them. An American working for the company with an intimatie knowledge of the American trade would be fucking brilliant here. We tune American muscle but it would look fucking diamond if we actually had an American here.

Do it.

Man, you would get a load out of my uncle. He's born and bred South Missouri so he talks somewhere between Karl Childers from Slingblade and Florida redneck but he's fucking brilliant--you can't let his accent fool you. He built a '65 Mustang that wins all these local drags. He's always talking about adjusting times and shit with engine; it makes no sense to me. He's pretty well respected around here. His brother built a '67 Nova and does a lot of racing out in Wyoming. I just think you guys would all get an equal kick out of one another.

Thats awesome man, we don't get many Mustangs in here, we get a lot of the new ones in but none of the old ones, we get things like Hemi Cudas, Dodge chargers, Plymouths, Dodge Vipers, Chevrolet Chevelle and Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds. Oh man I'm starting to dream now lol. He built a 65 Mustang? That must have cost a fucking fortune.

Joyrex You are right, and these 3 guys are particularly very good, with contacts.

not very much. a bit of basic structural physics but a lot of architects at the firms ive worked at just do planning/design type stuff instead of engineering. i dont really worry about buildings killing kids. but architects are really overworked and it doesnt seem like theres much opportunity to just have a 40 hour work week.

Become an Landscape Architect. You'll have the notoriety (almost) of an architect, and you'll be doing fun work. It's more art than craft.
